Rear passenger tail light and dash lights not working, fuse or headlamp switch issue?
Asked by Megan Aug 11, 2015 at 12:37 AM about the 2002 Hyundai Elantra GLS Sedan FWD
Question type: Maintenance & Repair
My 2002 Hyundai Elantra GLS's brake/tail light stopped working as well as my dash lights
(on the main console and the speedometer backlight). The indicator lights still work and
my turn signal still works on my rear tail light. I checked the fuses but they look good, I'm
going to test them soon but I wanted to get some ideas from other people.

Megan, I don't have an answer, but the same thing just happened to my 2002 Hyundai Elantra on Thursday night

Same thing just happened to my 2001 Elantra GLS a week ago.. Rear passenger side tail light went out, instrument cluster lights out (other than the strip in the middle that shows what gear you're in), and I also noticed the front corner light/ turn signal is out, and the passenger side as well.. I'very already changed the tail light bulb, and I'm going to test my theory that the front turn signal bulb might be the problem, and that they are all in series.. If not, it has to be a relay or a fuse somewhere.. I'm going to change my front turn signal bulb here shortly (2357A is the bulb for this).
The first thing to do is check fuses and bulbs.
My problems were all resolved when I replaced the side marker bulb which was burned out. That should solve your problem Elantra_beater0330

I've tried all of the quick fixes, changed all bulbs with new (old bulbs actually tested OK still) front headlights/markers, rear brake/signals, and liscence plate lights... all of them... I then went to check fuses, and I noticed the "Tail RH" 10a fuse was blown. I changed that with a spare 10a fuse, and that instantly blew, after starting the car and turning the lights on?!?!? The front marker, the rear tail, and the instrument cluster are all on the same circuit I've noticed, as well as the liscence plate light... And I can get the tail light to light up when applying the brakes, and the front marker to light up when using the turn signal.. But when they need to be on as "running lights" I have nothing, as well as having no illumination in the tachometer and speedometer.... I've seen many people have the same problem as me online, but nobody seems to have an answer :( guess I'm going to have to sort through this on my little time off.... could be anything :/

My liscence plate lights do work too... and the second function (rear brake light and front turn signal) of the dual filament bulbs are working as well... could this be a switch or a relay somewhere, that's malfunctioning??
I have a 2013 Elantra and my passenger rear tail light stays out!!! I have taken it to a small service Ctr to be fixed /replaced 3 times since Nov 2015. I just realized yesterday that it is out AGAIN! The Svc Ctr insisted that it is an electrical issue. I would like to take it to the dealer it they are really expensive and so full of it!!!! Maybe there has been a recall that we don't know about. It's really odd theater are all having lighting issues.
I am currently having the same issue in my 2005 after I installed a radio. I have been reading up and will be checking the diodes, hope it works

I've been having a very similar problem with my 2003 Elantra GLS - the tail lights and dash lights would seemingly randomly shut off and come back on. I found after this happened a few times, though, that jiggling the turn signal stalk would get them to turn back on. And off again if I continued to play with it. I thought it was just the dash lights at first, until I was pulled over while driving one night and informed that there wasn't a single illuminated light on the back of my car.
My brake lights in the one in the back window do not come on I check all the fuse and they are good

Same exact thing here it was the 10 amp tail lh fuse no issues since changing it hope it work for all you as well
Regarding the brake lights not working in a Hyundai, it is common to have a bad brake light switch by the pedal. It is very inexpensive and very easy to replace. Hyundai 93810-3K000 Brake Light Switch. I hope it helps. There has been several recalls from Hyundai for this switch in the past.
My car is having the same issue than Elantra_beater0330. Does anybody know how he/she finally fixed the issue?
Im having the same issue with my 2000 hyundai Accent We had a new stereo put in and LED lighting but all of a sudden the dash went out as well as the passengers rear park light. Ive made do with this till now but recently when driving all the lights will suddenly flicker or go off until you hit the steering wheel. Ive searched the whole car for any loose wires checked all fuses followed wires back to the fuse box and nothing! Please Help
im having this exact same problem in a 2009 Hyundai Elantra Except mine is in the Rear and Front Driver side parking lamps and side marker, the blinkers work in the back i haven't checked the front bulb yet to see if its causing a short, but i replace the fuse instant blow when parking lights on, i have converted the entire car to LED bulbs except the front turn signals so if its bulb related it could only be the front turn signal bulb even the head lights are LED now. ALSO my Cruise control has recently went on the fritz cutting itself off as soon as i set it it kicks back off. and my running/parking lights worked fine when i converted them to LED so i know its not the bulbs in the back maybe ill get lucky and it'll be the front blinker bulb shorting.. Its most likely a short problem of some kind either a short in a relay or a short in a connector or something its pulling more than 20 amps cause i changed the 10a fuse for a 20a and still blown if its not the front blinker shorting out at the bulb i guess the only place to go from there is with a short detector after you trace the entire line out on the diagram in the repair book one of those u buy at oreillys so i guess rear left messes up the running lights and cruise control and rear right messes up the right running lights and dash lights. i haven't had any luck so far finding a exact solution although its so specific there has got to be one and hyundai has got to know about it. the thing is that you can't drive at night because of this without risking a ticket which is rediclious i mean if you want to half ass it you can run the RH markers to the LH side With LED's you wouldn't even pull the power of 1 bulb that is a Redneck Fix for it. splice in Rear RH for marker and side marker and run 2 + wires to the LH side and splice it in after you cut the wires IDK i dont really want to cut the factory wires though im going to research alot more before then. but as a last resort its a gaurenteed fix.

Can not believe it. I was having the same problem. The whole right side was out, checked all the fuses under dash and under the hood. Replaced bulbs through out to no avail. Give up on it for the night, but the next day I drove to the job site and started searching again. This time I looked under the dash 1 more time and found that the fuse was blown out (Tail RH). Not sure why I didn't see last night. But all is working again....thank god, made me happy camper
I’m having the sam issue with my 2003. I took it to a mechanic 3 time and he ran a test on it and couldn’t find a reason why this was happening.we change fuses the back right harness and bulbs. Still is happening. My daughter already got pull over for the tail light being out with a warning to get it fix. I don’t know what else to do. Please if someone can help me please let me know
Check the turn signal arm. You can test this by juggling the turn signal and seeing if the lights flash. I had the same issue and replaced it for $30 and the issue went away. I think it’s tied in series with the tail lights and dashboard. Hope this helps!

My1993 Hyundai Excel Driver side running lights stop working after 25 years. The dash lights are tied into the same curcuit. Replaced the 10 amp fuse with a 20 amp to see if there was a dead short. No short. My guess is the added dash lights where drawing to much amps for rated fuse. Working fine now so far. Soon as i get a 15 amp fuse will use that instead to be safe.
My 2007 elantra has blown all fuse sizes up to 50a instantly as soo as the key is turned on ...... have yet to fix the issue .... Cannot figure it out . I have replaced bot bulbs multiple times and still have the problem so nexxt ima replace the bulbs and fuse before ever turning the car on to acc mode if the fuse still blows then its a short in the wireing system
Ok everyone, I know this is late but I also had the exact same issue happen with my girlfriends 99 accent, (parking lamps, dash lights, license plate lights, the fuse would pop as soon as power was applied). Here is what I did for the fix. I pulled the after market stereo out to access the illumination wire, the wire had been connected to a ground, shielding had been melted. So I disconnected the illumination wire I put a new 10A fuse in, added power and everything lights lit right up. Hope this helps

I have a 2006 Hyundai elantra that has been sitting for 4 months only to turn on and drive and have all my dashboard lights flickering of and on then off completely. I have yet to check fuses or blown lights that could be the culprit. But I can say that whenever I jiggle my turn signal arm they flicker off and on with a clicking noise. Anyone else experience this? Will run some tests and get back to this strange phenomena.
i had the same problem i change out my red 10 amp fuse .its really hard to see the crack of the fuse ..put new fuse in and everything is working now
after checking all the bulbs and connections I came to the conclusion that I had a short somewhere in the circuit. after tracing wires and checking all the bending and hinge areas I finally found the short on the license plate bulb behind the emergency trunk release, very hard to see or get at, the wires had shorted out and melted together. I was very lucky to find this problem.

We have a 2007 Elantra with the dash/instrument/interior light and left tail-light problem. Had it to several mechanics who could never figure out what is the problem. The car was stolen a few months ago, and when we drove to the other side of the state to bail it out and pick it up, voila! all the lights were working! Unfortunately, the suspension and body damage required a Salvage Title from the insurance company. We fixed that and on the way to the Inspection to ReCertify the car for road worthiness, the same exact lights went out again! Back to square one....
My 2002 Hyundai sonata has no running lights or dash lights turn signals work break lights and head lights work I was told under 1 of the seats theres a relay all my fuses look great

Having the same problem with my 2010 Hyundai Elantra. Dashboard light went out as well as passenger lights. Has blown a fuse twice so far. Mechanic looked at it and cannot find any issues with wires. My radio has had issues for years, sometimes it works sometimes it doesn’t. Could this now be causing the fuse problem? If a regular mechanic can’t fix it, who can?
