1986 Jeep Grand Wagoneer 5.9 AMC 360 HEI Conversion

Asked by poorscottie Sep 18, 2020 at 06:50 AM about the 1986 Jeep Grand Wagoneer 4 Dr STD 4WD SUV

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Jeep had no spark and a corroded ignition system.  I have purchased an
aftermarket HEI distributor specific to the Jeep application.  It comes with a
gear installed on the new distributor that looks like the gear off the old Ford
distributor.  Exact same.  Would you try to use the old one or leave the new one
on?  The old one has some slight wear where it has touched the cam gear.

The new gear looks the same as the old gear, metal wise so in it goes. New HEI worked, new wires, plugs. Started up and runs somewhat. But it does run, no knocking, smoking.. The tank is full of older gas that i have treated and am in the process of burning through. The carb may need rebuilt or replaced. Not sure which route to go with that yet. The rebuild is almost half the replacement price.
