Help? Car feels like its pulling air and has intermittant engine power.

When driving it feels lile the car is pulling air
or something. It shifts fine there are just 2
second pauses every 30 seconds where it
feels like the engine isnt connecting with
the car and theres no power. 2 seconds
later it kicks in again and shifts fine.

I went to 2 mechanics.  There werent any
codes (pending or otherwise) showing on
either of their diagnostic machines. The
engine itself as well as transmission were
found to be good after being checked out
thoroughly. The hoses, bands and sensors
were checked. 6 sensors were changed,
one by one, to identify the problem, which
wasnt found.

I just noticed on the last drive that smoke is
now coming up from under the hood close
to the middle of the dashboard.

Does anyone have any idea what this could
be?

There are no weird noises and everything
else works fine. Im at my wits and my
mechanics wits end.

Have you identified where the smoke is coming from?

my husband thought fuel pump area but said the behaviour of the car wasnt anything lile fp troubles.

Been doing some digging and haven't come across any good answers for you yet. But don't feel alone a lot of owners of this model car are having the same issues. Some say that there are some computer upgrades at the dealer that will help with this issue. Some say that changing the trans fluid helps and others say that changing the speed sensor helps. But honestly I have not found any concrete thing that any of the other owners have done to fix this issue. I will keep digging.

Ok found something you might want to try. Disconnect battery for atleast ten minutes then reconnect and take it for a ride. A good enough ride so that it can change thru all the gears. Because As soon as power is lost (up to 2004),,, the adaptive learn is cleared.. Several owners have done this and it really helped thier shifting.
