Brights shorting out the dash

Asked by TKStein May 23, 2018 at 03:58 PM about the 2004 Ford F-350 Super Duty XLT SuperCab LB DRW

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Ok several electrical weirdness involved with this. Right now, I crank the thing,
and it clicks away. Checked the recently replaced starter. It looks like it's still
seated in, but I have to climb under it to make sure (it was screaming hot when
I glanced). The whole story is that we were driving it, and the ABS light came
on after a few moments. Shut it down and attempted to restart, and it started
that clicking. Got it jumped, ABS light popped off after about a minute. Drove it
to try to charge up the battery, and the ABS light turned on again. Then, all the
dials on the dash flatlined. Also, when you turn on the brights while driving, the
dials and backlight on the dash go out (though the front light turns on). Brights
issue started about a month ago, after it got back from the shop for a fuel
issue. Replaced the multi controller. All the fuses have been checked.
Replaced the wiper fuse since that was blown. Tried to find if it was a short,
and the multi meter seemed to swear there was no short. Running out of ideas
and about to send this usually great truck off to a chop shop.

Update to the truck. FINALLY, my husband listened to me, and we changed the alternator. So, now the car starts, but flipping the brights still causes the entire dash to die aside from the front lightbulb. Any ideas?
