I am wondering what the W72 RPO code means on a 1980 Pontiac Trans Am. I know that it is a "performance package", but I'm not sure what that consists of?

On your Cowl Tag and also on your Build Sheet, you have listed different RPO codes (which stands for Regular Production Options) that which designate different options and features your car came with. There is a huge list of RPO codes across the years and some codes were used in different years for different items. The list of RPO codes is still being compiled, but here are some to get you started.....W72 Pontiac 400 T/A 6.6

I did'nt think the 400 was available in 1980. The big engine offered was the 4.9 L turbo?

Hi this is a paragraph I copied off of a Firebird website hope this helps , sheet or obtaining the cars PHS Automotive Services, Inc. (hereafter, PHS) documents. Options are those a car could have obtain directly from the factory. They are usually called Regular Production Option or RPO codes for short. Such options include RPO code W72 which was a higher output engine, RPO code WS6 which was a special suspension package that included quick ratio steering, larger sway bars, and 8 inch rims, as well as RPO codes Y82, Y84, and Y88’s which were Special Edition packages during the late 70’s for Pontiac Firebird models.

April 15/2019..... I have a 40 year old NOS (brand new) 1980 Pontiac Trans AM Quadrajet carburetor casting Number 17080270. I have had this carb for more than 30-35 years stored away in a cupboard in my basement for another street rod project that never materialized. I am downsizing and getting rid of tons of parts I have had for 35 years. I have had this carb so long now it really doesn't matter, but someone out there with an original 1980 TA I'm sure would kill for it! Through searching the Pontiac sites on the internet to learn info on this carb. I have found out that it is for a 1980 Pontiac TA with a 301 motor with a RPO code....W72 code and a Y VIN. code. I want to sell it now and want to advertize it properly. Need some help from someone that knows what I have here. What is it worth now to the right person? Thanks for any help.........Dave

there was a W72 301 in 1980 , it was a Turbo block w/o the Turbo ,and had Electronic Spark control , unrated at 170hp at 4400 rpm and 235 lb ft at 2400rpm. the 2bbl 301 was no longer produced in 1980 so the 301 Y code was used for the W72 and the W code was a standard 301 4bbl 150 hp @ 4000 rpm and 240 ft lbs @ 2000 rpm.
