infiniti 03-04 g35 can it be a highmileage car?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair
im looking into a used 03-04 g35 but my dad is worried if I buy one with over 80k miles by the time it hits 120,000 its apparently going to give me tons of issues because hes heard they are unreliable. I need opinions!

Engine-wise the VQs were designed to be good til at least 200,000 miles. However, there are plenty of other issues especially with the first year G35s. If possible, look for an +05 G35. Also are you looking at the coupe or sedan? I have an 03 coupe and I have replaced the driver's side window motor twice and the passenger side lock actuator; both of which are common issues with those cars. Also your electronics are crap, I haven't had to use it but my 6 disc changer has been jammed for the past 4 years I have owned this car. Otherwise, great engine, great car, just little issues that are prevalent with all of those models.
My 2004 G35x has not given me any trouble as far as windows go, but I've found that when I brake, I feel like the bearing is going to fall off. Aside from that and alright fuel consumption, mine is okay.
I own a 2003 G35 with about 141k miles on it, and i havent had any major issues. I've only had small problems like my driver side window motor going out.
I have a G35 sedan. I drive it like Nascar. Has 204k miles and still runs strong. Only major issues, upgraded the control arm bushings. (Stock ones wear too fast) I would recommend these cars to anyone. :)
I have an 06 & at 100000 mi you will need to perforn a lot of maintenance but not on the motor. Maybe the thermostat housing. The drivers fan motor, a lot of bushings & suspension, hubs & bearings brakes muffler. Especially if it was from the northeast. I live in VT & mine is not easy a lot of times with rust. But the thing goes like hell no problems with motor at all overheating is usually the drivers side fan motor worked 4 me. Car has been great since 42k when I got it. At 100k needs a lot of TLC, but will be ready 4that 200k mark no problems. At least big ones. I mean there are so many Bells & Whistles something must go wrong.TT in VT
I bought my 03 G35 2yrs ago with 118,000 mi and it's never had a problem in which now it has 170,000 so that's why I was reading up on it to see what could be expected in the future but they are fun cars to drive.
I got a 2004 G35X in 2010 (I was the second owner). 141,800 miles and I think it had at least another 60,000 left on it. Engine ran great, NEVER had a single mechanical problem. Amazing car. We lost it last week to someone running a redlight, though. Totaled. Kept us safe and unharmed, so it did its job, but I would buy the same car again in a heartbeat. Do your preventative maintenance and you should be good -- it's not cheap when something does break (unless you go to a tow yard for your parts), so just be aware of that.

I bought a 05 g35x sedan 6 mths ago with 110k. Now has 121k. One owner so I was lucky. This car flies and rides great! In manual mode most cars can't match it's speed. Haven't had one problem. I have an 06 bmw 330 ci, and I actually enjoy the ride and acceleration of my g35x better.
I bought my 03 G35 6MT sedan in 05 with just 19K on it. Now has 218K. I just replaced the original clutch. A while ago I replaced one of the control arms. Other than that, just tires, oil & filters. Oh and the audio/enviro electronics had to be serviced for $350 (known problem) but now works great. Anyhow the VQ is known to drink a little bit of oil between changes. Well that kept increasing a bit more each year after 150K. Now it drinks too much oil so I will probably replace rings and if necessary pistons depending on shape of the cylinders. Valves will also be serviced since they also make noise now. I actually am looking forward to this job since I love this car and the way it handles. If anyone knows of the best pistons & rings to use, I'd appreciate the info.

I bought a 2005 G35X in 2009 with 32K miles on it. It ran without any repairs (just oil changes and tires) until 100K miles when the first thing to go was the 6-disc CD player jammed so radio only. Shortly after it needed the first major repairs related to axle and rotors which ran more than a thousand. At 115K the car stalled for the first time ever and lost power steering and breaks and needed the cam position sensors replaced $300- 500. Not bad for a car I've had for 7 years. The interior is still fantastic and the engine other than that one stall is extremely reliable and has never overheated.
I own a 04 G35 Sedan and it nearly hit 270,000 miles and I never had any problems no check engine lights, no knocking engine, I been maintaining the car well with full synthetic Mobil 1 K & N filters 89 gasoline and I get 19mpg on streets and 21 on Highway and it runs smooth.. my only problem was the oil gasket was leaking and I took it to the shop 60 dollars with labor and its flawless...
Honestly this is a great car. Great is actually an understatement. I have an 04 g35x sedan with 240k on it. I'm the second owner and you'd be surprised to know that the only issues I've had are brakes (normal) and hub bearings (normal) this is regular wear and tear. I would tell you to go for it because this is definitely a reliable whip and not only that it's very fun to drive it will keep you on the roads. 5 star car.
Best car I've ever owned... I'm 53 yrs old. Ordered my G35 coupe 6mt in 03/2003, arrived 05/2003... Still have it, love it, has 112k on it. It is expensive to maintain, tires, brakes, etc... If you can change oil, brake pads, etc, that will lessen the cost. This is a performance machine, it is fun to drive, it costs money to drive... There are faults to this car, cd changer errors out, window motors go out (had several replaced during the first 3yrs warranty), door locks go out... Reason I keep it is: I fell in LOVE with the looks when I saw it in pics before it was released back in late 2002. Went to several auto shows in 2003, it was as good in person as the pics, even better live- in person. Seriously, this is a very fast car, great handling, horrible in snow/ice (because of rear wheel/summer tires-never tried all season tires or winter tires). I've test drove several coupes since 2010, nobody has beat this car, including Infiniti with the new G37 coupe. Best looking, performing, coupe under 50k...

A rear wheel drive car with timing chain set up in the front is the best car you can own with G35 . And if you guys want some advise to keep window modulators alive just secure the buttons better with water resistance silicone.
i have G35 coupe and the engine have some noice. what does it is? the repairman said that engine almost over! I can't belive please advice me
The noise (ticking) is usually 2 areas. Valve clearance and stretched timing chain. I gave my G35 a full overhaul (bearings, chains, tensioners, pumps, valves, rings, seals) myself at 219K and now it burns no oil or makes any noise and is very powerful. Parts cost about 1200 - 1400. The cylinders are so hard that the rings wear out so cylinders only need de-glazing. The exhaust valves also take a beating but intakes stay perfect. Also need to measure cams and replace if worn out. Just be safe and measure everything at overhaul. An excellent engine.
I have a 2004 Infiniti G35x sedan with 140k. I've owned it since 116k. Other than your regular oil changes, tires, and hub bearings, this car has never given me any mechanical problems. However, I have had the car act up, but that was only because of the thermostat malfunctioning ($350 at infiniti). Other than that, super reliable car that is not only fun to drive, but still has a classic design. 5 star car for sure!

I know this is a rather late answer, but I have a 2004 Infiniti G35x sedan as well. Mine currently has over 234,300 miles on the clock. The first owner of the car had it for the first 230,000 miles, and it still runs like a charm. Since I've owned it, I've only had to do the regular oil changes and tires. No mechanical issues whatsoever. I've had countless compliments on how good the car looks for its age and mileage, and it rides almost like it came right off the assembly line. Parts can be expensive, but the car is very reliable so if you don't drive it like a maniac then you won't have to worry about paying extra for parts you didn't need to replace. Oh yeah, it's a ton of fun to drive too. And the engine noise is one of the best I've ever heard. (The only one I can think of that's better is the Jaguar F-Type V6.) My brother and I have loved the G35 so much that between the two of us, we've owned 6 of them. Highly recommend!
80,000 miles is just barely broken in if the car was well maintained.
I have a 2006 G35x with over 350,000kms. I've just had to replace my radiator and engine mount l, which is fine, I love my car but because I've inherited a car that needs a bit of tlc I think my mechanic is trying to scare me into selling by thing me that my engine is not good and it's hard to sell this make/model of car. I've read all the reviews I've not seen much complaints about engine troubles, some feedback would be much appreciated
Realistically, with high kms like that, its gonna ve hard to sell. ☺. But a cars what you make of it, treat it poor, or treat it well...some cars have flaws, the first generation of any vehicles gonna have an issue thats addressed in the next. For g35's. 03-04 had issues that were checked over in the newer ones.
I have 436,970 km's...engine still runs smooth and peppy. I'm the second owner...so yes, these are great higher mileage cars...engine wise! I've been experiencing fuel gauge problems though...changed both senders-then found out was cluster...changed that with a used one;fuel gauge works, but now the manual mode doesn't work?? C/D player another issue...lol never ends
Hi, this is a question rather than an answer. I'm planning to buy my first car and i came across an 2008 G35. The only concern i have with this used car is its high mileage (190,000 miles). However, the car is in good condition as the exterior and interior is well maintained. I plan to put on extra 60,000 on this car. Is it possible? Is it worth buying? Hoping to get some feedback opinions.

Planning on buying this car what do you think guys (Infinity g35x 135000 miles 6 cylinder car) 04
Thinking about buying this g35 for 5k but on the body it has 215k miles. engine has 115k miles, said he has paperwork to prove it. 05. Is this a good deal? He posted the condition of the car as of like scratches and stuff and im fine with all that just worried.
I just got a G35X with 111k for $5,000. It has some cosmetic blemishes (small scratches and a few small dents) It has a clean car fax but it looks like it had been hit in the back at some point. There is an obvious repair just below the door for the gas tank and I believe the lid for the trunk has been replaced. Everything looks straight underneath and it drives great. A friend was telling me that timing chains go out on those engines a lot around 150k miles. Reading through here....it doesn't seem to be a common problem. Anyone have any idea? Also, about what do they run to replace?
Planning on buying a 2007 G35x with only *30,000* miles for $12,000 It was owned by an elderly lady who barely drove it, and it is maintained well. Worth it? How long will it last me? Any other factors to consider?
Definitely think it's a good deal. I drove a 2008 G35 for almost two years and it had nearly 230k miles on it when I sold it for $8k. Infinities are really good cars, if you're looking in to buying a luxury car I would definitely consider an infinity verses BMW, Mercedes, or any other car really. I hadn't had a single problem with the car, and had it checked up on regularly. I only had to fix minor things like getting an oil change, getting a tune up and realignment. Other than a Porsche, it's the best car I've ever driven, hands down.
2007 g35s 6mt 154k the quickest stock g sedan ever built by infiniti faster than the coupes and 350,370 z
Proud owner of a 2003 G35 sedan car has 200,934 miles on it. The first gen models have issues with climate control/Bose radio had this repair done via shop located in Florida. Other than routine maintenance I have replaced the head gasket, front struts, camshaft sensor, wheel bearing..normal for a 14 year old car. I baby this car it's not my daily driver my Murano is only because of my hour commute to work. When I do get behind the wheel of G instantly a smile is on my face. Great car to own and you have the engine and transmission from the 350Z what what could be better.
I'm looking into getting a 2005 infiniti g35 coupe with 186k miles for 3900, should I get it ?
Sounds like a good price if no major problems pop up.
I have a 03 Infiniti g35, when i bought it it had 97,000+ miles, and when i said it ran like a planeeee!!!!it ran.....till this day i still have it and it has 179,810 miles now. It still runs good BUT DOWN THE THE LIBE I DID HAVE SOME ISSUES FAR AS RUNNING HOT. TEMPERATURE GOES UP AND SOMETIMES IT DOESN'T.....TOOK IT TO THE DEALER TO GET A CHECK IN THEY TOLD ME I MAY HAVE A BLOWN HEAD GASKET....keep in mine its a 03 but its paid for as well...i really love it clean inside in out but if i was to have a choice to get it fux i will because Infiniti is a good car. Some may say why spend to get a 03 fux when u can get some new???? Yea but look at any amerian car that has high miles. They will not run like a foreign
I had a 2003 G35 Sedan and drove it til the wheels fell off at about 160,000, but I did have trouble that just seemed to stupid to excuse. The (stock) HVAC controls for some reason were inextricably intertwined with the (stock) sound system. They both just quit and replacing the entire mess, integrated into the center panel, meant replacing the entire center panel. It was nuts and no way I would have paid to do it, but a friend of mine is a car guru and he spent a day and a half rewiring the damn thing for pizza and beer. The car ate brake pads but i did love it.
I’m looking at an 05 g35x with 99k miles on it for $8k. It looks in good condition and it felt like nothing was wrong when I did a test drive. Should I go for it? I really had fun with the test drive, nothing but a smile on my face the whole time
Just bought an 09 g37x for 8k 95000 miles. Runs smooth about to hit 100k after just a couple months of owning put premium in the tank and always use synthetic only

I have a 2006 G35x with 260k no major issues at all and all my electronics work. Just did spark plugs and valve covers, and the pesky cam sensor o-rings. Also replaced few suspension things. It runs like a top. No shakes no vibs. And I still put the smack down on my buddy's IS300.
Looking at a 2003 g35 with 230k miles for $1700. It drove great, not obvious issues but need new tires/alignment. Any reason to steer clear? Carfax came back clean.
Best car ive ever had 231k miles and i love it. Nothing but normal maintains brakes n tire and I change my oil often. They are fast as fuck. I don't let my kid drive mine lol
I hit all basic maintenance dates on time and have had zero issues. 04 G35 sedan. 221000 strong. Fingers crossed it keeps up the way I drive lol
I just bought a 2003 G-35 to Pittsburgh from Texas and loved every minute of the 25-hour trip. this car has been passed around 3 of my kids. There has been some body damage, but not horrible. Worse, Texas heat has peeled the clear coat. I plan to get both taken care of. Otherwise, you'd never know this car has 217K and counting. Runs like showroom new. There was a bad run of circuit boards when new, but after 15 years, if it hasn't shown, I think we're good. I'm slowly getting to the cosmetics, but fell in love with this car right away and talked my son out of it. Even the analog clock works! I was happy to give up my non-refundable return flight from Dallas,. It's a gem.
I bought my 2004 G35 new and have kept it all these years. From my first test drive, I knew it was an amazing car. Now, 11 1/2 years later with about 248,000 miles, my engine has gone out which made me buy another late-model Infiniti. It is a wonderful car but does not handle like my G35 so I have decided to have the engine replaced so I can keep driving it a couple of times a week. Never had a better car, not ever!!

I have a 2003 infiniti g35 sedan with over 200,000 kms on it. It runs like a dream. I get regular oil and filter changes and that's about it. Have had the breaks replaced and I'm on my second set of tires. Zero issues so far other than with the CD player. It used to stick and also caused my battery to run down. There was a major recall because of this issue, especially in the states, but even though my car had the same issue, the dealer wouldn't even acknowledge that there was a problem. I scoured the web and found out that this was a recall issue. I ended up having the CD player removed and I sent it to a guy in Florida who fixed the problem and returned it to me. Since having it reinstalled I haven't had any issues. I love this car and I'm going to drive it until one of us dies. (I'm hoping it's the car first.)
I am a proud owner of 03-G35 sedan. Second owner. First was a lease and I have every receipt. I don’t baby this car and rarely make friends driving. I’ve heard the CLICKING so took her to a different shop than usual. For the record my CENTRAL WIRING ISSUE INVOLVING HVAC and CD AND RADIO is present. My temp panel works 99% if the time. Radio works 5% of the third me CD HAS NOT PLAYED IN YEARS. I love music but sacrificed so I can drive this car. So at 209,000 the ticking has suggested panic worthy of a new car purchase. After reading what I have and knowing how I have come to love this car, I’m going to invest another $3,000 to have the timing chain and head gasket (?) fixed. I paid $23k in 2007 and I’ve bought new tires repeatedly and replaced brakes twice. Radiator replaced about 3 years ago. One more issue LIFETIME HEADLAMP BURNED OUT AND HAD TO BE REPLACED BY DEALER WHICH INVOLVED CMPLETELY DISMANTLING FRONT END $600 and two days work. I can’t think of any car that turns my head enough to even want to consider a new car. Good luck.

If your stereo isn't working, sent it to these guys: Factory Car Stereo Repair, Inc. 1480 Oberlin Terrace Lake Mary, FL. 32746 (407)830-0777 They fixed mine that I sent from Canada. Best money I've spent on my car, and the cost was minimal
sunblock40 answered 5 years ago
BTW, still on the topic of the stereo not working, I went through a few batteries (they kept draining) and even had the CD player/radio taken out and "repaired," even though that wasn't the problem. It's a circuit glitch in the sound system that the folks in Florida can fix. BUT, Infiniti did a recall on the problem, so they know about it, and if you take your car to an Infiniti dealer, they should honour the recall even if your car's ID isn't part of the recall. Don't go to a Nissan dealer, but an Infiniti dealer. I found this out after I'd had my sound system removed and sent to FLA for a fix, which I paid for. The fix is not expensive, though, and takes very little time to repair.
I have a 03 g35 with 193k runs like new but someone just told me I would need to replace the timing chain soon. Anybody has this issue?
I have a 2007 G35x...second owner. i purchased in 2012 with 127km...today it has 336km. i've not had any major issues. Reguar oil changes and wear and tear stuff. Just recently replaced lower wheel bearings, and now Control arm bearing on driver side. (clunking noise) it'll be the most expensive repair thus far. $500. No biggie. Colleges are harasing me to look to getting another car. Not going to happen...i love this car and will see it to the end.
My g 35 03, 4 door has 290,000 km. That's when I got it, I've put 20k km on it and had to do 500 in maitenence so far but for that many km its running really good no leaks, very minor slips
I have a 08 G35x “S” edition. I have 185,700 miles on it. I replaced the front axles, exhaust, both rods. It still needs a whole steering fluid system which is gonna be pretty expensive to get done, but it’s done me well for quite some time.
It’s 2020 and I just purchased a 2012 G37 with almost 97k miles. It’s just beautiful! I have had lots of anxiety about getting this car because of the mileage. I’ve had friends and family that said “Get it!” And others that said “No!” (Because of the mileage) I’m the 3rd owner (other owners in same state; FL), no accidents, all good on Carfax. After riding and going to and from work I’m falling more in love with my car each and every day. After reading the reviews on here, I’m much more at peace and decided to come back and share my experience. I went from a 03 C-class Benz to a 2016 Hyundai Elantra and now the best out of all, my Infiniti! God is good!
I just bought a 2004 G35x with 49k miles. I'm the second owner; the car is mint!
Just found a 2004 with only 31,000 miles. The owner cried when I drove away, she babied it for 16 years. It has an incredible low growl in the exhaust. CD player has left channel out, Michelins have only 5,000 miles but they are 6 years old, may have to replace. Also, Battery might need to upgrade, it's working but because of age I don't trust it. This is my second G, my first was a 2012 G37. It was faster and had more electronics, but I love this little car!
GuruFLZF4 After a complete a maintenance check and update, I would definitely trust that car. I ordered one of the very first 2003 G35 6MT sedans way back in Nov 2002 and picked it up from Sam Swope Infiniti in Louisville in March of 2003 and it’s still going 230K miles strong. Just added a stainless steel Magna Flow catback exhaust system and wish I done it years earlier after patching my exhaust system here and there over the past 100K miles. It now has a little more hp and torque and I use very bit it from that engine and 6MT once in awhile when daily driving. I believe my car will last at least another 80K miles. The really crazy thing about these Gs is their design is timeless. They still look as good or better vs. the cars of today.

I have the 2004 G35 sedan. Spent a grand on it last year putting in a new Pioneer sound system with Apple iCar. Brakes need frequent attention, odds and ends have failed over the year but he engine and tranny are rock solid. Runs like a bat out of H3ll. Love this car. Perfect balance.
I have a 2004 G35 6MT Sport with 155k that I bought in 08. Best car ever! Easy on tires; hard on brakes, exhaust and struts. Recently started high oil consumption (used full synthetic since day1) and not sure why. In northeast, so there is rust. Any ideas on oil??? Runs like very 1st test drive!
