Car Cut off

Asked by Latrecia Jun 28, 2017 at 04:14 AM about the 1999 INFINITI G20 FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 1999 Infiniti g20 cut off on me at a red light & smoke
was coming from under the hood. Car was driving normal
& besides it cutting off and smoking for a short period of
time, it gave no other warning signal. The car also started
back with no problem & was moved out of the street.
What could this be???

If it was steam you may have just overheated. If however it was smoke it could be more serious. Have the trouble codes scanned, depending on what shut the engine off, a trouble code may have been set. (Most auto parts stores will do a free code scan for you). An engine that cut off and smoked may also have trouble "breathing," so check some maintenance issues: PCV (positive crankcase ventilation) and EGR (exhaust gas recirculation), air filter, plugged catalytic converter, check all fluids too while you're at it.
