1998 Chevy K1500 not getting fuel. New pump, filter, spark plugs, rotor, relays
Asked by Dmcelm_81 Jan 31, 2016 at 09:40 AM about the 1998 Chevrolet C/K 1500 Silverado Extended Cab LB 4WD
Question type: Maintenance & Repair
I replaced the fuel pump and fuel filter. I put on new plugs and wires. Also
replaced the cap and rotor. Ran for about a month, then it stopped getting
fuel again. I sprayed starter fluid into it and it ran for a few seconds, just
enough to burn off the starter fluid, then died. I'm at a loss here. Please help.
I love my truck. Thank you...

Sounds like the fuel pump is bad, check the fuel pressure with a gauge, it should be 56 to 63 lbs.
i just replaced the fuel pump and filter. i can here the pump when i cycle the key on and off. i also did the plugs, wires, cap and rotor, and the relays. It ran for about a month then I get in it at the store and it ran for a second and then dyed. I sprayed some starter fluid into it and it ran just long enough to burn off the starter fluid
Suspect the injectors, spider lines, and or fuel regulator leaky. If you were to do a fuel pressure bleed down test, it would verify this. All would need to be replaced as a unit for lasting results.
Going to get a fuel pressure gauge today. I had the battery disconnected for a couple of days. before i went to go to the store I figured i would see if it starts. Connected battery and it started. I turned it off and it started again with some hesitation. then it would not start at all just like it has been. I just wanted to post this before I left to go get the pressure gauge. I will check the post when I get back from the store. Thank you for helping me out with this. PLEASE KEEP POSTING!! I will let you guys know what the issue was and mark best answer.
Great! I'll be here and keep checking back, I'll be in and out from my garage today. So hook up the pressure gauge, cycle the key on off until pressure builds up, should fall between 56 to 63 lbs. unless there is a real bad leak. Let it sit once pressure is at its highest point, key off, the pressure should not drop more than 5 lbs. in 3 minutes. If it does, you can verify injectors, spider lines, regulator by doing a dead head test on just the fuel pump. Pressure should be at least 63lbs and more.
Ok. just a quick post. Fuel pressure gauge reading at around 35. What could that mean?
How do I do a dead head test?
Ok, 35 lbs is not good. So you will have to probably find some other fittings, The fuel filter is a good place to tap into. You would be only running the fuel pressure into the gauge from the fuel pump. This would verify that the pump is putting out proper fuel pressure and verify there are no leaks from that point back. Chances are if you take the plenum off you would see fuel leaks.
I will go do that now and post back what happens. Thank you for helping me along the way. I love this truck and want to drive it again soon...
Sorry...the rain is coming down pretty good here. Might have to wait until tomorrow. I hope you are around...lol...again thank you Rowe...
I am here every day, just like doing this stuff, was out in the garage making picture frames. Talk at ya tomorrow.
Ok. Still reading low pressure. before I go and spend $300 on this part and have to go through this project that I haven't done before, could it be anything else...lol
Well tell me how you checked the fuel pump, or did you?
Sorry it took so long to get back to you. Super Bowl and work got in the way. I think I"m just going to go ahead and do the spider injector and pressure regulator. I'm getting the part this weekend. I watched a couple videos on it and it seems like it's something that I can do.
Sorry if I didn't get back to you, I am having a problem not getting my stuff (questions/replies) from this sight. I found you again in my deleted stuff. So I am here, got your last message, I too watched the Super Bowl and fell asleep in the 3rd....... Now Yes, I just wanted you to be sure on leaks, but yes on the injectors, spider fuel lines, and regulator, usually 99% of the problem. See they redesigned all this, so putting it in as a hole unit will make all this last a long time. So I think you know what to do, let me know on things, I'll keep checking back, I'll move this post somewhere I can find it.
Dumb question, but needing a serious answer. With you knowing the situation I am in, how much could "sea foam" or something along those lines help me? Is it possible that the injectors are clogged, causing low fuel pressure and just need to be cleaned? would something like "sea foam" help that?
Not in your situation. Your fuel pressure test would still show good even with clogged injectors. All need to be replaced with a new unit as I suggested. And there are no dumb questions. So when you do this job it is important to clean everything up inside the plenum before assembly.
Thank you. Someone from work told me to do that. I just thought I would ask. https://www.youtube.com/watch? v=8RffhTSAZM4 This is the best video that I could find on doing this job. if you feel like watching it. It would be cool to get what you think. Is it pretty much to the point, is he missing anything, is he doing anything that I shouldn't? Again, thank you for sticking with me. Ihope that when this job is done, I should be ok.
If the link does not work, you tube search...How to change a SPIDER INJECTOR on a Chevrolet V8. briansmobile1 is the poster
You know, I don't think you have told me what size the engine is, not that it is going to matter with your problem, I answer so many questions and what caught me here is you saying a V8. Sure I would watch the video. But everything I have ask you to do leads to the injector assembly.
Hey there D-81, so yup, thats what you have to do. I watched it, and the dude didn't know what the "S" stood for, well what it is "Sequential Multi Port Fuel Injection" is the set up you have. And I'm sure it is leaking. And I looked up the part you need and it is about $400. Have you checked on price? And the little pointers you should pay attention to like the silicon spray, and if you are doing this in the cold as to heat up the spider lines for installation. Well my computer is fixed so I'll be looking for your post.
My O'Reilly's and Auto Zone are pricing me at $300. I live in Florida. It has been getting into the 30's, but this is Florida, it won't last long. It should be in the mid 60's this weekend
I'm up in the U.P. of Michigan. Going to be below "0" tonight, tomorrow, and Sat. night down to -20. The parts store I checked is out of CA. And it beats our parts stores pricing. What a difference from where you live.
Oh, I thought it was the temperature difference! lol.
Do you have any tips or tricks for remembering where everything goes, or the order, when putting it all back together. That's my biggest concern. That guy in the video gave me a little bit of stage fright, but this has to be done.
I use to get shook when pulling an engine or rebuilding a starter or alternator, carb, what ever. I just found to be organized, make sure to keep track of all the nuts & bolts, so when putting it back together all ways look for the best routing for what-ever, but everything just falls back into place since everything like the plugins & cables are all dedicated to where they go. You really can't put something back where it does not belong.
I'm a little excited. I feel it's not as hard as my mind is making it out to be. I am pretty handy with tools. I do some woodworking. I've built workbenches, chairs, outdoor patio stuff. and general around the house repairs. I've done a few things with automotive, simple remove and replace...but not so much engine/ tranny work.
Well you have a sense of what to do. It is going to be a big job. Not a 1/2 hr. worth of work, more like an all dayer.
So something came up. I won't have the money to pay for the part. I am very upset. I love my truck. It makes me money, as many trucks do. I guess a yard ornament for the time being. Not good...not good at all. Paycheck to paycheck isn't easy with three kids. All bills are paid, but it doesn't leave me with much, such as life I guess. I know you are on here all the time. I will keep you posted as I find a way to pay for this part. Trust me. I am a man of my word. I will post the progress. So, don't go anywhere...lol. Thank you...
I'll be watching! Check your personal e-mail in your garage.
Ok...So I finally have the spider injector. I started getting everything out of the way yesterday and stopped at the fuel lines. They are giving me some trouble. I can't seem to get the big nuts free. I don't want to put too much tension on them and risk messing up the lines. Do you have any tips or tricks to get these lines out?
Can the foul filter couse low foul pressure ?
