Truck acts like it is stuck in neutral when it is in drive or 3rd

Asked by Luke_Money Aug 02, 2016 at 03:13 PM about the 1996 Chevrolet C/K 1500 Silverado LB 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 96 Chevy Silverado single cab Z71
it's been acting up the past few days and
the speedometer won't read. The only way
to really be able to drive it is in second
gear I need help figuring out what the
problem is exactly. My brother and my
cousin has told me four different things.
The ignition module needs replacing, the
shifter cable needs replacing, the
transmission is slipping, or the gauge
cluster is gone out and I don't know which
one it is

There's a little plastic gear in the side of your transfer case(speedo sensor gear) that game me the same problem in the past. Doesn't look like much but it does just what you describe when it goes. Worth a try
