Most batteries today are sealed. Is this an old battery? It needs to be topped with water, otherwise is can start losing cells, which result in reducing the voltage it can supply. If it drops too low, it won't start vehicle or run it properly. It can also cause the alternator to overcharge it. FYI, if the battery was really low on water, and you fill it up (only use distilled water), you diluted the electrolyte too much. You can test the electrolyte with a hydrometer (looks like a turkey baster). If this battery is more than several years old, you might want to just get rid of it and get a new sealed battery.
