Bank 1&2 running lean.

Asked by WayneR41 Apr 15, 2019 at 05:58 PM about the 2000 Ford Ranger XLT Standard Cab LB

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Banks 1&2 are running lean on my 2000 3L
ranger xlt. It runs really rough. Don’t want to
idle. Had scan tool on it. It gave me a few
codes.  The tube from EGR valve was rotten.
Fixed that. Replaced air filter and fuel filter.
But still the same thing if not a bit worse
running wise. I also noticed that the exhaust
and the pipe at very back of my truck it’s
super hot. To the point water was sizzling on
the pipe. Is that normal where truck is
running lean??  I was going to replace fuel
pump assembly next to see if that’s going to
fix the lean problem. Fuel pump does work
but it sounds very faint. Had to have ear
pretty much against the very bottom of the
tank to hear it. Had fuel line off on motor side
of fuel filter and had key turned on and didn’t
pump out a lot of gas but it did pump some.
So I don’t know if pressure regulator is shot
or pump don’t have enough pressure
anymore or if check valve is shot. Any
ideas?? I have new spark plugs for it but I’m
not getting any misfire codes.

Why not check the fuel pressure at the fuel rail (Schrader valve is located on the fuel injector rail) for proper PSI using a pressure gauge. Also make sure there are no vacuum leaks. Reading fuel trims with a scan tool will provide a lot of info too.

I did replace fuel filter (new), air filter (new), I replaced fuel rails. The old one was rotted out and leaking gas on to top of engine. Should the exhaust get extremely hot at the very end of tailpipe with it running like a bag of crap?? I know it didn’t get that hot when it was running good. I don’t have a pressure tester
