If your vehicle is an automatic first try having the transmission fluid and filter changed.

The only thing you can try is to add some Lucas Transmission Fix. Do not over fill remove same amount on bottle from transmission before adding.
A stuck or sticking shift solenoid inside the transmission, Lucas transmission fix may work but it needs to be replaced, these transmissions are notorious for failure due to lack of maintenance, so if you want to get some miles out of your Axiom keep the transmission serviced. Yes it’s a little expensive but nowhere near what another transmission or another vehicle would cost, I have a 2002 XS with 268,000 miles, original engine and transmission, serviced probably more than it should be but I look at it like I can’t afford another vehicle or trans. These are awesome, fun, and strong little SUV’s!!!!!!
Sorry, I just realized that this was a 2 year old thread , but what the heck someone may be able to use the knowledge
I have a 2002 Isuzu axiom I stopped at a stop sign went to take off my car wouldn’t go but only go in reverse after reading reading I seen that it will bypass first gear if you can hit winter mode when I hit winter mode it does bypass for securing those in second gear but is soon as you come to a stop it goes right out of it and it starts back is if you’re a neutral again do you think that I need a whole transmission or will it be just the solenoid in the transmission the first gear solenoid to be replaced
