Grinding - rear right tire

A while back I had a flat and noticed a bar connected to
my tire was bent, but didn't pay this much attention as a
buddy of mine who knows cars advised it wasn't a huge
issue, as it was only a bar made to stabilize the car and
still intact. After riding home tonight, my car started
making noises when I was slowing down and after further
investigation, that bar connected to my tire had snapped.
I am looking to find out 2 things; 1, what it is that actually
broke and 2, the seriousness of this. I included a picture
as well.

Fix that right away, you have a serious safety issue. It is called a rear trailing arm.

Why would that happen ? did someone else drive the car ? It's serious for sure ,I wouldn't let you drive away like that ..
