Intermittant Starting Problem!

Asked by Mike May 04, 2009 at 10:04 PM about the 1999 Ford Expedition 4 Dr Eddie Bauer 4WD SUV

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Help, I think our Expedition is psycho!  Every 100th or so start it simply does nothing.  Unlock it, open the door, climb in, insert key and nothing.  Lights are all on, etc.  Nobody home.  I've had it to a mechanic and to a Ford dealer.  They couldn't figure it out.  Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Could it be the anti-theft?  A short in the ignition?  We've had the started checked, the wiring harness removed and cleaned all contacts.

What exactly happens when it doesn't start. Does the gauge light up and run its self test? Do you hear the fuel pump go on? Is there anything in common with the other times it doesn't start? Try to be as specific as possible.

So okay you insert the key you turn it one notch the face display charges up the fuel pump kicks over you turn it the next time all your dash lights turn on you beeping sound goes on and when all is said and done the seat belt sign remains on the engine light remains on now when you crank it over all the lights on the dash beginning to short out leak and no firing

I have the same problem in my 2013 I just bought. Every so often it does the same thing. Everything works right except the starter doesnt engage. Fuel pump runs. I can hear the solenoid on the starter click but it doesnt crank. I wait 15 to 20 minutes and it will start beautifully until the next time. It had only done it after it s been running and then shut down for a short period of time. Ie: gas pump, run into the store Any ideas?

I have the same problem. I have replaced starter, selenoid switch positive starter cable, ran a separate wire to ground the starter to the battery. New bsttery

Same thing. I have a 2011 Ford Expedition and exactly same issue. Towed it to Ford 3 times and to another mechanic and NO ONE can tell me what is wrong. Every time I tow it, it will magically start up at the shop. Mechanic even plugged in diagnostic and nothing came up as unusual, called Ford and got the run around. Anyone figure out what the problem is? Sometimes I wait 15-20 minutes and it will start, sometimes, it takes days, and then it will magically start.

Same here on my 2000. Mine cranks but don't fire. For everyone also make sure w are in park all the way or it will do nothing

My 2020 expedition with 300 miles is doing the same thing. Had it word on and now at 1800 miles doing it again. Push button to start and lights and alerts come on, but the starter does nothing.

Same here. 2011 Ford Expedition. Just getting it towed tonight... Hopefully I can come back with something this week...
