Interchanging wheels

Asked by Jeremy Sep 28, 2021 at 03:38 PM about the 1999 Ford Explorer 4 Dr Limited AWD SUV

Question type: General

I have a 1999 Ford explorer AWD
limited. It has original wheels with
255/70/16 tires. I replaced them with
2004 explorer XLT factory wheels
with 235/70/16 tires. Now when I
turn sharp, the inside of the wheels
scrub the suspension. And I mean
the wheels scrub, not the tires. Are
these wheels dipped differently
inside? I didn't pay attention when I
swapped, I assumed they should fit
fine but something is bad wrong

Thank you! I feel like a dummy because I assumed they would work but after measuring the back, there is a LOT of difference. I'll have to swap wheels again. Thanks!

Offsets can vary tremendously between 2 wheels of the same diameter and width. Add to that the fact that the SHAPE or profile of the wheels can also be very different-meaning there can be a larger diameter INNER profile and/or a differently STEPPED shape between wheels. As a general guide, you'll have a higher probability of decent wheel to component clearance if looking at wheels from a FWD or AWD Explorer to swap with yours, not from a REAR wheel drive one-like a lot of the 2004's are.
