what is the difference between the Cam shaft position sensor and the crank shaft position sensor?

Asked by jtrap Feb 06, 2015 at 05:16 PM about the 2003 Jeep Liberty Limited 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Jeep 2003 Liberty.

Idles high from time to time. Once, I got a P0340 code that illuminated where the odometer is...never ever saw that symptom before. Engine light is still on...Jeep still idles high from time to time.

A crankshaft position sensor came in when distributors were done away with and the crank pos sensor measures the speed of spin, or rpms, and relative position of each cylinder to each other and send signals to the ECU for ignition timing, when to "ignite the fire" . A camshaft position sensor measures the rotation also of the camshaft, and sends signals to the ECU to 'tell' it when Cylinder X is near TDC on compression with both valves closed, to time injection of fuel in to combustion chamber A bit over-simplified, but really not a lot, and at least gives you the principle of how both work together, with ECU

In my case the cramshaft sensor and the barometric sensor are failing causing my revolutions do not rise to 2500.

I re-scan the computer using the scanner but it makes the error again. The ECU was revised and fine
