Swap transmission for a newer

At first glance, I would have to say no as the newer transmission could have computer controls that your 2002 does not have. If the newer transmission does not have computer controls then depending on the bell housing configuration, overall length of the transmission etc it may work research would be the best thing to do and I would start at a Jeep dealer ask the question of their transmission tech.
The Liberty came with several different automatic transmissions. I doubt they are interchangeable.

Will a transmission out of a 02 jeep liberty renegade fit and work in my 04 jeep liberty sport?
Does. Any know if a 04 5 speed Manuel will fit In a 05 only difference is mine is a six speed Manuel
Yes it will. You will need the wiring harness plugs for the reverse switch and transfer case, if you are swapping that too. The hydraulic clutch slave cylinder and starter motor can be kept as these fit. Also you need to keep your old gearbox support and remove the six speed gearbox mount and bolt the five speed mounting to it. You cant fit the whole cross brace as they changed the mounting position on facelift models. It might be worth grabbing the front and rear prop shafts as I swapped these as the rear fits to the output on the transfer case differently, the front is ok but not sure the length is different. And nearly forgot, you will need the whole gear lever stick and gaiter that fixes to the base plate as they are different too. I did the same in reverse (5 speed to 6 speed) Sounds difficult but if you are decent with a spanner can easily be done over a weekend.
Can a 07 jeep liberty trans fit a 05 liberty? 3.7
