Question type: Maintenance & Repair

the transmission in my Explorer was working perfectly and one day I missed a turn-off
and put it in reverse. It did nothing. When u put it in reverse it seems to want to move but
does not. No matter if u rev the engine it will not move. I bought the vehicle last may '14,
and changed the trasmission oil and filter. The reverse simply does not work

I have an 09 explorer that doesn't go into reverse either. It doesn't even act like it tries to move, like it's not ever engaging or something. But then If you shift into neutral it goes forward when you hit the gas. I have checked and changed the transmission F Fluid. In neutral, drive, 3rd camo 2nd, 1st it goes Forward. But will not move in park or reverse. Any ideas?

The reverse band is broken in the transmission, i had mine fixed once, it happened again years later, my son drive ot like that for 2 or 3 years

To say the reverse band is broken is close to correct. there is a small pin, bolt, rod that locks in and then the band holds the drum in place and the fluid pressure will force it into reverse. So also low fluid will cause a similar not reverse issue but also no forward. Now back to the band/pin if this is broken you could still drive the vehicle in forward only, but the little broke part is floating around in the transmission causing all kinds of havoc, most likely wedging into a place a damaging items further. DO NOT CONTINUE TO DRIVE YOUR VEHICLE, park it as soon as possible. A complete transmission replacement may be needed if you continue to drive this for weeks or months. The pin issue can be as simple as a $500 fix up to maybe $1500 cause of labor involved (recommend you get a soft rebuild so tranny is almost new, while it is all apart) A replacement tranny from a junkyard is cheaper but you have really unknown condition till you get it in (again labor cost in and out), a rebuilt or reman unit is a safer bet with a warranty usually. New is ok but even more costly and usually does NOT have as good a warranty as a rebuilt unit. Yes guys who fix these do a better job, than brand new from the factory. It is my firm belief you buy a low milage used car and fix it up (buy extended aftermarket warranty maybe?) vs a brand new one vehicle that has a short life warranty. A new car that breaks down before 100,000 miles is a lemon IMO.

The Reverse went out in our 2006 ford explorer 4x4 over two years ago, so my dad let me drive it to and from school and out on the gravel roads fishing etc. Air works, everything works except the reverse. I even took it a few hundred miles with my older brother. no issues with tranny (except reverse). How long will it continue to do this? It has lots of power in the forward gears. the only other problems was a leaky oil pan. any comments?

My 2008 4.0 XLT Explorer reverse band evidently is broken.. Been like that for 3 years. When put in reverse it will move on level ground slowly, so a guy can get by with that as long as you're careful to never park nose in on any down slope. Everything else works and great and not worth fixing trans at current vehicle value. I've had 3 ford explorers over the years and love them. 200k miles
