I have a 99 ford explorer 4x4 xlt, I wanna make it 2wheel drive when the switch is set in the auto position, and only goes into 4x4 when I tell it too. How do I do that? Some sort of fancy computer thing to tell the gem not to go into 4x4 when the tires slip. Or something as simple as unplugging a wheel sensor.

Have you thought of just removing the front drive shaft?
Auto is as you say,it is tied into the ABS system, just tell,s if a tire slip,s,but it work,s opposite in the anti slip,4x4.But yes it will be the sensor,at the tire. You can by pass it ,but the 4x4 lite may stay on.

I want to be able to switch between 2 wheel and 4 wheel. Im not pulling a driveshaft everytime I wanna do a donut. So if I unplug a wheel sensor, then it will alwase be in 4x4 or will it stay in 2wheel because it dosent think any tires are slipping. abs light will be on though. Even easier, a specific fuse? Then I could run two wires to it and into the cab with the fuse wired in and a light switch.
go old school and look for manual locking/unlocking hubs
