If the tranny fluid has not been serviced in 18 years suspect problems there. Look at the oil via the tipstick. Is it dark colored and smell burnt? Is fluid up to normal operating level? Check the linkage from the shifter to the tranny to make sure everything is connected and moving when shifting through the gears.
