My Jeep Cherokee TD Limited 1999 why dose the heater blow out cold air

I had a 1993 Wrangler with the Inline 6cyl motor. Not Exaclty the same vehicle but I think your Cherokee has the same motor. My heater started to blow cold air also. Became apparent on a 2 hour drive in the middle of winter (~20°F) and the heater did not get over 50°F I think. The thermostat on the engine had become stuck open and did not allow the anti-freeze to warm up enough to keep the engine at a normal temp. The Jeep heaters use the heat of motor to heat up air for the cabin. So if your thermostat is stuck open the engine can't heat up enough to properly heat the air coming out of the vents. The thermostat was about $10-$15 and took 30 min for me to replace. I hope this helps!
