Check the vacuum hoses for leaks.
Is it a violent jerk when you put it in gear, or more of a simple stall? A violent jerk suggests a bad transmission, a simple stall could be a vacuum leak. Is your battery weak/dead? Jeeps, and Dodges of this era used a computer that didn't like weak battery starts.
