2017 Impreza Oil Consumption - Time to Trade it In?

I hate to put my Impreza's problems on another unsuspecting car owner, but
the oil consumption problem has become a major hassle. I have a manual
transmission and was told maybe I drive the car too hard. The oil level light
illuminates less than 2000 miles after my last oil change. The dealer did an
oil consumption test - beware! these tests are a joke. They make you come
back within 1200 miles and - voila! - you passed! You drive away, and 500
miles later the low level light comes back on and your dipstick is dry. Do
yourself a favor - do not buy a Subaru or do your research by Googling
"Subaru oil consumption class action lawsuit."

In the meantime check your oil level every week (unless you want to ruin the engine). Switch to 5W20 or 5W30 synthetic and your oil consumption should be less.

Yes, you WILL reduce consumption by switching to 5w30, especially in the summer. That said, recall that the dipstick is VERY conservative, reading empty when only 1.5 qts down, and that the oil check-light illuminates when only 1 qt down. So you're consuming 1 qt of 0w20 every 2k miles? That's actually normal for these boxer motors. If you're in a warmer clime I'd even use 10w40 synth...especially in a hot summer. Note that 5w30 is the INTERNATIONAL SUBARU spec outside North America, where SOA was too afraid of very cold start timing chain rattles annoying owners and provoking calls to their Service departments. What a joke....

Your engine will be much happier if you never let if get more than 1/2 quart low. I can tell by the sound if my engine is getting close to 1 quart down.

Oh c'mon! Do you mean only in the first few seconds of a very cold start, or when running at temp? That last quart simply sits atop the sump. Maybe if you consistently corkscrew at 1+g forces you can cause momentary starvation if TWO quarts down? Dunno. I'm feeling one cup of morning espresso down, so need another cup...\that's different scenario, eh?
