the 4 and 6 cyl engines will bolt directly in place as long as the engine was a factory option, you would only have to change motor mounts (likely). Now getting it to run properly is a whole different story. If you start changing the year of the engine, their is a lot of different wiring aspects that you would have to change, from simple sensors, to complete harnesses and computers depending on the year engine you want to put in. If you go from an obd1 engine (which is your current) and change to an obd2 (which is what is in the 2001) it will require a significant amount more thought in order for it to work properly. As long as you have the 4.0 straight six I would just get yours rebuilt or find one rebuilt. That is a solid engine and their is no reason to re-invent the wheel for your specific application. However if you have the 4-cylinder option, I would get a 4.0 liter straight six. In theory that should bolt in and hook up almost the same as long as you get a 4.0 from the same year, or close to it. In 1994 chrysler changed a few things to the cherokees to prepare for the ob2 change that will occur in 1996. So an engine from a 1994 or a 1995 should suffice very well for your ultimate goals.
