95 Jeep Cherokee Sport seems to not be getting enough fuel through.

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 1995 Jeep Cherokee Sport its the
4.0L Straight 6 automatic. When I purchased
it I was aware it needed a fuel pump. After
going through 3 stores I found it takes a
universal fuel pump that is common for a
1990 Mercedes. We replaced it and it was
running like a charm. Two days later, any
time we would take a sharp RIGHT turn it
would cut out and almost die. The next day,
3 days after fuel pump replacement, we
went through a curve and it was done. We
came out of the curve and it was spitting
and sputtering and had no go, it was barely
running. We pulled over. It struggled to
crank and you have to pat the gas to get it
to even raise rpms then after about 3000 it
will take off and rev up. However, it is not
driveable. There is not enough gas to
actually drive it. We replaced the fuel filter
and run seafoam through it, no change. You
have to spinit a few times to get a crank as
well. Any ideas?? My next step? What could
cause it?

Hopefully you didn't buy an airtex pump, you need to check the pressure at the fuel rail to see if the pressure in within spec, if not, the universal pump that you purchased is probably defective.

Im not sure if it was airtex brand or not but ill start there. Can I ask why not tgat brand? I know he one we removed was the Bosch brand

I've replaced lots of fuel pumps, and my experience is that Airtex pumps fail a lot more than the norm, i won't use them. The bosch is a more reliable and better quality.pump.

Didnt need to, we cranked it and when we covered the hole on the air box it would run perfect. So knew it was"vacuum" problem. We dropped the tank again pulled the pump out to see the line was completely ate out and shredded so we replaced the line and cranked it and we havent had a problem since excepy being low on gas and it being on a hill ha.
