Mechanical- Cylinder #5 quit firing

10

Asked by gonzalezgj Jul 13, 2016 at 11:03 PM about the 1999 Ford Ranger XLT Extended Cab SB

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Loss power in very hot weather, stopped at Autozone for PC diagnostics.
"An ASE certified Master Technician has seen this problem on your type of vehicle before and has performed the following repair to fix the problem:
Replace Ignition Coil (s), Spark plug (s) and Spark Plug wire (s).

The mechanic back home is telling me I may have had a problem with fuel injection, but the diagnostics at AutoZone said nothing about fuel injections possible failure.
Is this possible? Wouldn't the AutoZone Diagnostics test have said something about fuel injection?

Primary DTC  P0305  Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC)
Overview - Cylinder Number 5 Misfire detected
Definition - Code P0305 indicates that cylinder 5 had too many misfires within a predetermined period of time.

Both technically can be right. The mechanic may be speaking from experience, the Autozone's computer is just regurgitating probabilities. Do a little visual inspection yourself - make sure the plug wire didn't touch the manifold and get burned, reseat all the plug wires, etc. It would be a shame to spend all that money on a set of plug wires and coil when it a loose wire.

Kenf,is right, start with the obvious, then if that dont fix the issue, pull the number five wire off,and crank car, check for fire at that plug,if you have fire, there will be only two issues that would cause this, the fuel injector on five,or you have a bad valve.

Thank you both for that advice. I'll look into it first thing in the morning. Due at the shop at 8.

Never ever ever buy parts based on a diagnosis from an auto parts store. Many times they are correct, but many times they are not. I would look at the spark plug and wire first, maybe even move them to another cylinder to see if the miss moves. If that yields no information you could swap the injector with one on another cylinder to see if the miss moves. How many miles are on the plugs and wires?
