Drive it back and forth slowly in a straight line and stop and try shifting again. It may take quite a few attempts to get it out of 4wd. If you have a manual shift transfer case it can take quite a bit of effort to shift the transfer case. Driving on hard surfaces in 4wd is a good way to ruin a transfer case.

Are yo in neutral when shifting from 4L? If not apply foot brake while stationary and in neutral then try to get it to shift into 4H then 2wd.

My Ford is much older but that - what those guys say - is good advice. Sometimes I have to in reverse and Granny Low back and forth... several times- after unlocking the hubs from the dinosaur age, Borg-Warner
