I had the same problem. I'm told if you hold down the unlock button down on the key fob this can happen but I don't recall doing this. I'm calling Honda today

My 2017 crv just did this tonight. I came back to the car and found all 4 Window rolled down half way. All 4 perfectly lined up. Does anyone have any solution or reason why it did this?

Hey Ted, I think I accidentally sat on mine and that's how it happened. If you hold the unlock button there's vent feature that rolls all four windows down and cracks the sun roof (if present). I now place my keys on the table or hang them up at night so there's no way this will happen again.

We have had a 2017 CRV for about four months. Recently, my wife went to Disneyland and when she returned to the car that evening, all four windows were down. Again, when we went out to go to work this morning, all four windows were down. Reading the above answers, she went out and yes, holding down the unlock button lowers the windows, but we did not do that last night. Could someone else's key fob to that?

This has happened to me at least 10 times I took it to the dealer of course they said nothing was wrong. I made them document my appointment because I feel there is something causing this. Either my car will be stolen or soaked !! My next step is to contact Honda directly. We owners need to ban together on this issue

If you push the unlock once and then push and hold it down it will open all the windows. This can happen accidentally if the key fob is in your pocket, it happened to me. I am going to inquire if this can be turned off but I doubt it, and it doesn’t just happen with Honda’s

Yes this happened to me last night. I was holding my unlocked longer accidently because too many things in my hand. I freaked out. But I tried it again and it did it.

This morning all windows on my 2017 Honda CRV were all the way down and the sunroof was also totally open. Luckily no rain last night. I am aware of the vent feature were after pushing the unlock twice the windows and sunroof will crack open a little. This was not it. The fob was not near me so an accidental operation was impossible. Will contact my Honda dealer and hope they have a solution. Anybody have a solution or had Honda comment on this problem.

My 2018 Honda CRV did this last week while in my garage and then again tonight during a pouring rainstorm. I came out to find all 4 windows open and sunroof open and the inside of my new car soaked! I had not used my key at all; it was inside my purse both times. After drying out the car the best that I could and putting it back in my garage, I did get out the key and mashed and held the unlock button and all the windows opened again. I have since placed my key into a hard plastic box where nothing can press on the key and hopefully this will never happen again. Honda needs to warn people of this problem when a vehicle is purchased from them. My car will remain parked until the rainy weather passes before I drive it again.

Unfortunately we have the same issue , came home at night ,locked up the car and put the keys on the hall stand but discovered our lovely car full of water in the morning after a very wet stormy night. Windows and sun roof wide open.Took it into our dealer to be told theres nothing wrong. Can't get it to happen again with holding down the lock button and scared to leave it unattended in case it happens again. Back to dealer also NOT HAPPY!

This happened to me today, I was told by a colleague that the car alarm was going off and the windows were down. He also said that it was strange as we both arrived at same time and they were closed earlier. I was not near enough for the key fob to remotely trigger the car to open. Very strange!

How do you roll them all back up at the same time? I don't like this feature at all.

Have been having the same problem with my 2018 CRV. Dealer, of course, "has never heard of this!" Nonetheless, they did suggest using only one fob at a time. After several weeks, it was clear that one of the fobs was defective and causing the problems. Now trying to get them to replace the fob under warranty. Pathetic that Honda does not address this problem and even worse that dealer service people blatantly make everyone feel like it has never happened before.

Just came out from work to find my 2017 Honda CRV completely soaked, as the windows were down and the sunroof was open during a storm. I appreciate this forum, as I could not understand how it happened. I am contacting the dealership and will do the same with Honda . This is not my first concern with several of the features of the car.

Is there a way to roll them all up from the key fob? Manual says hit unlock and then hold down for 10 seconds but does not work.

BTW ......For the time being I did the lock feature in the car which stays on if the car is turned on and off and hopefully will stop this problem until I get answers...

Maybe try disabling this feature (allowing the windows from being let down my the key) in your settings and then it may not happen on its own?

Are you able to go into the settings and turn this feature "off"?

2017 Honda CRV here - last week my sister drove by and all my windows were down - not the sun roof though. Today I wake up and all 4 windows and sunroom open. . . so weird calling dealer on this. . .

This happened to 3 times on my Honda Accord 2017. Once it was raining. Even sun roof wide open. The fob when in your pocket and gets squezzed the windows open. I complained to dealer and honda about this but no avail. They should have a disable feature. I just bought a crv 2017 and thought they disabled this useless feature. I guess i need to get up in middle of night to see if windows are open. Sucks.Honda fix this and make it a recall.

I have had the same experience now twice where all of my windows were rolled down and the moon roof open. I don't think the buttons were pressed as suggested above to cause this but I was able to replicate it by pressing the unlock button and then holding it down.

My 2018 CRV has twice put the windows down and opened the powered tailgate while I/my wife have been away from the car. Either the remote is too sensitive to bumps, or there is something very dodgy with Honda's electronics. Either way, Honda needs to come up with a solution.

Thanks for the support group! I have had my 18 crv since Feb and it just happened to me today. Luckily I left work right before it rained. I got in my car and noticed all 4 windows evenly down a few inches and sunroof open an inch. Freaked me out a bit because I had AC on for the ride in and everything, including the sunroof shade closed.

My 2018 Honda CRV filled with rain last night while I was sleeping. All windows down and sunroof open. I can not make it happen again by pressing and holding the unlock button. This has to be fixed!

Update. I called the dealer and they say it is a design feature. I called Honda Customer Service and they say there is no fix. They gave me a case number and said the concern would be passed on to engineering. At least the case number puts me on record.

Hello everyone. This windows rolling down issues is crazy to be dealing with and worrying about an otherwise great car. Your car can get damaged or even items stolen. It also happens on other models. Please send email to tips@caranddriver.com about your experience. Find any other car magazines. Honda needs to feel some heat about this and fix it. I don't use Facebook but maybe someone can post a complaint there to https://www.facebook.com/Honda/

@Zou Did you take it to dealer? What did they say?

I purchased a zipperedd key case for each of my fobs. This totally encloses the key fob, decreasing the risk of any pressure to the unlock button and so far, no more open windows. I showed the case to those in the service department and to my salesman and asked them to please tell customers about this feature and the protective cases available. (I found mine on Amazon. I got one plain black leather one and one with the Honda Logo on it.)

Our 2017 CRV did this last night! Thank goodness, for once, we didn't have a rainstorm! I thought we were going crazy this morning when I looked out the window and realized they were all down...so glad I thought to google search this issue. Need to figure out how to best protect this from happening again-thank heaven we live in a super quiet, safe area! O_o

Called Honda Canada the other day after I walked out to my moonroof and all windows fully open. Shockingly they, and my local dealership, never heard of this problem. Hard to believe that it's a feature they highlight in their CRV Videos on line and they never heard of a problem. Was told to go and buy a sleeve for the FOB. Wondering if you all put in official complaints as I was told I was the first to raise an issue.

Please ream my comments above and file complaints. I filed a complained and the last I heard was this: "We will document your feedback regarding the concern. Just happened to my 2018, which I've had for just 4 weeks. I'm pissed. It's raining. I KNOW I didn't hold the unlock button too long, because as I was walking away from it, I LOCKED it.

Sorry to hear that. I know the feeling. Honda has a faulty design on an otherwise nice car. It is easily fixable with software, but they and the dealers refuse to acknowledge. Best thing is keep tracking this issue as well as other forums. Here is another I found. Posting it here for refrence: https://www.crvownersclub.com/forums/137-2017-present-official-specs-features-etc- gen-5/160482-my-cr-v-decided-open-all-windows-moonroof-rainstorm-everything- drenched.html

It happened to my CR-V2018 a few weeks ago. It had remained for 6 hours in the parking on a day when I expected it to rain. When I got to the car, all windows and moonroof were open. I took it to local Honda dealer I got it from (Canada). Their technician was not surprised to hear about the incident and immediately showed me how to replicate. When I asked him whether it was a bug or something on the car electronics, he said he was 100% sure holding deliberately or accidentally the unlock button was the only way it could happen. He sounded very familiar and knowledgeable about the issue. Now I am looking for a plastic case for my FOB. Whoever had this "brilliant" idea at Honda should definitely get fired.

There are FOB car envelopes you can purchase on the web. Same ones that deter thieves from stealing the "signal" that unlocks doors that can be purchased....but that would mean you have to put it in and out of that envelope when you actually want to drive your car. I have resorted to putting my FOB into an empty pill box. Has been working great :) but such a shame. Honda should make an FOB that perhaps has a cover slide on and off the button section of the keys.

The 2017 CRV is the crappiest car I've ever had. The electronic system has bugs and the button on the side of the gear shift fell off, and today, as you have all experienced, all of my windows and my sunroof opened by themselves. I am selling this car and NEVER getting another Honda.

I just bought a 2018 Honda CR-V yesterday. I took it to a restaurant and when I returned to my car the windows were all down and the sun roof was open... I was totally shocked, but very thankful it wasn't raining. Is there a way to turn off this feature?

15 people found this helpful.
1,920

No, and if you read the thread, you will find out how pissed off people are with this. It will make your life paranoid, looking out the window to see if your window cars opened. The only way is to go back to the dealer and return the car if you are within the return period and get something else. This is a disaster feature ( I was rained on when windows opened) and Honda will not acknowledge it.

Had my 2018 for 6-8mo... found this had happened a couple of times, had no idea why. Thank you all for the details – I was able to replicate the action (press “Lock” and release, then press “Lock” and hold for 5-10 seconds). Questions: (1) Why does this not have a reverse function (closing the windows/sunroof by remote)? (2) Why is there nothing about this in the manual or on the website? (3) Why does the service staff appear to know nothing about this?

Was told this morning that my drivers door window was fully open and it was raining. I definitely never left it open as I stood there and made sure the wing mirrors had retracted and the window was not open when I left it. I also once came back to it after parking to find all my windows were down by a couple of inches. I have tried to get this happen again with the key fob and nothing I do can replocate what has happened. I rang Honda and they said I am probably catching the fob in my pocket as I leave the car, so why wont it do it when I am deliberately trying to do it. This feature needs taking off the cars spec.

I bought my new 2018 CRV in June and this has already happened to me twice; both under different circumstances. Neither time did I hold down the button too long or accidentally hit the button on the key fob. My car sits in the driveway, and I am totally paranoid that it will be either soaked or stolen. Can't leave anything in the car while out shopping because it just happens randomly. I am very disappointed and shocked that Honda will not own up to it. Be sure to report it to Honda at crrs.secure,force.com/service/hondaw2c. I reported both incidents and will be taking it to my dealer shortly.

It’s not only the Honda CR-V but also mine the Honda Civic 2017 it’s happened 2times to me. When I back to the car all 4 window was room down half and I realize sun roof also open , I get so,scared and feel so weird how this things could happened, I figure it out it might be from the remote key, now I know it is.... Will do report the incident and talk to,the dealer.

It happened to me last night. All the window and sunroof were open half way. There is no way it could happen accidentally with my fob as I didn't even touch it. The biggest problem is I can't get the sunroof closed. I reported it to Honda, anxious to hear from them.

150

I find it criminally negligent that Honda allows this to go on. Leaves the car primed for weather damage or theft At a MINIMUM the feature should be disabled by default and could be enabled in the cats menus Also the feature is triggered with a single button, making it easy to trigger. Remote start requires two different keys to avoid accidental triggering and this shroud as well Someone who has suffered damages should file a suit and request class action status for all Honda owners. The it’ll get fixed overnight

It took the dealership service department all day to tell me that it's a feature and not a problem. Even the service department does not know this is a standard feature and thinks there is a problem. Insane.

This has happened to my 2017 Honda CRV twice. The first time was during the night when we got about 2 inches of snow. All 4 windows and the sunroof were partially open when I came out in the morning. Snow - not so bad. Last night we had a storm and got at least an inch of rain. I came out and all 4 windows and the sunroof were completely open. I keep my keys on a hook, so no buttons were pushed. My car is completely soaked! Now my dash has this message when the car is in motion: "Keyless Start System Problem" (see photo). I don't think Honda can deny there is a problem.

13 people found this helpful.
180

BTW, the manual has instructions on how to use this feature, which too the "advisor" several tries to figure out. The other issue is that, if you wanted to roll the windows back up the only way to do it is to get back into your car and turn the ignition on, no option via the remote. Real bad software design and I hope they are working on a fix and if nothing else, train the people on this.

Woke up this morning to a flooded car. I MADE SURE I had my keys held loosely in my hand before I put them up on a hook. This problem is so fucked up. I loved my CRV right up until this. Now I feel like I need to switch out of Honda all together.

11 people found this helpful.
1,920

So here is more bad news. Honda just did a recall on my CRV-2017 for engine problems. They fixed presumably the issue, but they did not take the chance to add an option to disable windows/sunroof from opening from FOB key.

This feature has been damaging thousands of car (of assorted makes and models) for a number of years and the tech 'geniuses' and car companies refuse to acknowledge that this 'feature' is not wanted and is causing avoidable damage to very expensive personal property. The failure to provide a FOB choice that does not include the signal sequence for this 'feature' is nothing short of criminal negligence on the part of car manufacturers. I hope that some high powered attorneys figure that out soon and start what could be the largest class action lawsuit in the history. Seems like just about anyone owning a late model car could be affected by the damaging feature. It is us, the consumer who get screwed when the car is damaged. Heck I thought telling friends to avoid Honda vehicle would prevent them from getting this worthless feature...but it is everywhere.

I did nothing "accidentally" that would open my windows. I went to dealer and found there was no fix for this problem so I asked service manager to remove the four window fuses. He would not do it, but the salesman was kind enough to do it for me. (At 81 I find it difficult to get under the dash) I then made an appointment to have an alarm installed. After that I removed the batteries from my key fob and reinstalled the window fuses. Hope Honda has no more surprises in store for me.

180

Does anyone know what is the reason for this feature? The only thing I could think of was to let out hot air as you return to your car, but that is not a good enough reason.

4 people found this helpful.
500

This is a complex problem that is both a software and hardware issue. The software is fixable should Honda want to fixit; the hardware problem is more complicated because it can involve an electrical short anywhere in the car, but is often associated with the one remaining keyed door lock on the driver’s side. Squirt WD-40 in the lock. It might help. For those whose car gets wet, file a claim with your insurance company. Enough claims, maybe Honda will pay attention. Also file a claim the the Nat’l Highway Safety Board. Enough complaints, then they might move on it. After several frustrating years of dealing with this issue I sold my Honda Odyssey at a loss. Never, ever will own a Honda again.

This has happened to us twice, returning to car from shopping and find 4 windows 1/2 way down and moon roof cracked open. This is not a rainy climate area, but theft is always a concern. No info in the manual. Will document this with the local Honda dealership tomorrow. I'm glad my wife found this site for all the helpful info, I will figure out a convenient hard shell case for the fobs. I will look into any class action suit that might already be in the works. Auto dealers already have a tough reputation w/o having the public bringing it to surface - makes one wonder what else Honda is hiding.

Samething happened to me... parked my car, was carrying bags in with my keys in my hand... had no clue windows were opening. Came out next morning to go work and you can imagine how I felt being it had poured during the night! Dumbest feature ever! A few days ago I put my car in drive and the shift release button just crumbled.. drove straight to dealer and they replaced it. For thirty years I always leased a Chevy, decided to buy this time and thought I’d go with a Honda... wish I stuck with Chevy!

I think I got to the answer of it, it is either dirt in the keyfob or a dying keyfob battery. I took apart my primary one and started using my secondary. No problems yet. I may have noticed some errant red blinking on my keyfob during the period when I was having the window issues. CALL HONDA CORPORATE. They are aware of the problem and I was told that the more who call in to report it the sooner it will be addressed. likely through a software patch that will allow for disabling this function.

Hello Janet, just wanted to let you know sticking with Chevy wouldn't have helped. It seems this problem affects just about ever make of vehicle. Honda, Chevy, BMW, etc.... it doesn't matter (although some high end owners have reported dealerships would disable the feature.) The rest of us are stuck because some pea brained techno gadget geek engineer came up with this 'great idea' for remote controlling windows and the industry has implemented the faulty design - a design that can easily send false signals when we're doing nothing more unusual than sticking our keys in a pocket or purse. Maybe we should start complaining to consumer protection agencies and copying the complaint to our representatives and senators, then when it happens to one of them, they'll know they have a constituency who would favor regulation automobile manufactures and making them liable for vehicles that are damaged by this feature... We simply haven't gotten the auto makers attention...yet

Purchased 2018 CR-V in Louisville, KY on 12/18/18. No problem until this morning. All four windows down. We are very appreciative of the scope, research and advice provided on CarGurus. Thank you. While I will make the contacts recommended in this thread about this ludicrous "feature", I will also post a detailed statement about the issue/problem on my FB account. That has proven to be a somewhat "over the back fence" means of spreading the word, both good and not so much. Again, thank you.

Looks like my husband and I are in "good company"...unfortunately. We also left our vehicle for a few hours to eat dinner...yes, while it was raining outside, only to come out and find our 2018 CRV windows half open, including the sunroof. VERY irritating and leaves us feeling VERY uncomfortable. If the vehicle doesn't get ruined because it gets soaked, it could be stolen. Clearly needs some attention. Calling Honda tomorrow...not sure it will do any good, but will continue to be a squeaky wheel with the rest of you! Thanks for sharing. Thought I was losing my mind this evening!!!

This happened to me yesterday ! Just purchased a 2018 CRV a few weeks ago. Parked all day from 8 to 5 at work, came out of work to find all of my windows cracked open about an inch I am assuming they were open all day in the rain... Thanks to this forum I now understand this is a feature on our vehicles. I like the response earlier to have the window fuse removed. That deffinately would stop this from happening again for now till Honda can correct. Which from the sounds of all of the complaints Honda probably won't be doing anytime soon. Which will make me a very angry Honda owner.

This same thing has happened to me twice. Once the windows were all the way down, and today they were halfway down. I tried today to intentionally do this with the unlock button on the remote but it does not open the windows. Honda needs to offer to fix this problem.

Just got my CRV in August. This just happened to me yesterday morning. I thought I was losing my mind until I came on this site to see I’m not the only one. I saw the windows all down exactly the same which I knew I didn’t do. I put the windows back up and then went on Google and found this site. Thank God I did. I went back out and yes my moonroof was open as well. Had I not seen this site my car would have been soaked last night. Now I’m paranoid that it can happen any time. I will definitely call the dealer tomorrow and report in the sites listed here.

Just bought a 2018 CR V LX on a yearend closeout. I have returned to my car twice to find my windows down, once partially and once all the way. The latter occurred this weekend while I was visiting Washington DC. I had left the car parked over two nights before I discovered the open windows this morning. Fortunately no rain or breakin. So thank you one and all for these reports and suggestions. I will report this to my dealer and directly to Honda. Reporting this to Comsumer Reports seems like the best suggestion. I will do that as well. I was very pleased with my CR V purchase until I discovered this “design feature”.

Happened to me this Thursday during a rainstorm and taking car to dealer for checkup because it also triggered a warning about the electronic brake system. Guy explained to me on phone that it is a “feature” that one might want in the summer when it is “humid “. I noted that every other “feature” was demonstrated to me during the sale pitch. I like the idea of contacting consumer report in addition to corporate.

Yes, I heard that it's a feature too from different Honda reps. They just cannot get their stories straight because they themselves did not know about it, until I told them. Honda rep said it's a safety feature although had no explanation what the safety was. Dealer said it's to cool down the car from when you are 50 feet away. You know they understand that it is a design flaw, and say will look into it, although no one bothers. I think only lawsuits will wake them up, but if you signed arbitration agreement when you bought the car, good luck winning.

I just saw and interesting 'solution' at a car talk community forum (https://community.cartalk.com/t/windows-mysteriously-opening-spontaniously/50623/6) the author claims "I Lemon Lawed my 2017 Buick Cascada for this reason. It is apparently happening to a lot of cars that have the feature on the key fob. I’ve never been near the car when it happened." If it is true, it is an interesting angle - if enough people can do that with their vehicles it would start to get damned expensive for the dealerships. Might get their attention... Just saying.

Happened to my 2018 CRV today. Called the dealership and was told about the FOB feature. Most car insurance wont cover rained in water coming into a vehicle. The software needs to be eliminated.

this needs to be fixed now. if this is for cooling 2 suggestion would have minimized the problem, before the windows are opened the computer should be able to check the temp. it is not above a customer set temp the windows should not open. Second if the the windows are opened by FOB after a period of time the windows should be closed if a door has not been opened.

And, you should be able to reverse your action from the distance, currently you cannot. So if you want to roll the windows back up, you have to actually return to your car and start your it to do so.

70

A simple solution is put a plastic clasp over the buttons so they can't be push accidentally. The buttons are not used to unlock or lock the car. In the rare occasion where the button are needed either slide or snap it off.

20

Which buttons are you referring to? The button that causes this to happen is the unlock button on the remote. Thank you.

20

Though I hate this "feature", the inability to roll the windows back up using the key fob actually makes some sense. Imagine, if you will, your windows are rolled down and some kid or animal crawls into the car and falls asleep. Also imagine that it is 90 degrees outside. If you roll up your windows from a distance, you probably will not know they are there and they could die from the heat. Not a good scenario. Honda should either give us the option to disable it, make it harder to accidentally trigger or remove the feature altogether.

I have sent emails to Honda, Consumer Reports (who gave high grades to CRV), BBB, Car & Driver and NTSB describing the issue. I think maybe to get the attention of a TV news station. That would be cool. But then that just means the Hondas lose resale value?

a claps would cover the buttons on the key fob you don't want to press, if you want to press the button side the clasp down.

Just wanted to add my experience to those others who have reported windows and sunroof opening unintentionally. This happened to us, at a Disney Resort in Hilton Head. A Disney employee reported to us, and as it had been pouring for several hours, our car was soaking wet. Luckily the Disney folks were very helpful and ran an air circulator for 18 hours and dried out the soaking car. When I phoned my dealership, they were less than helpful, stating that it was a "feature". When we returned home, the dealership was much more apologetic and helpful, but after they showed us how to recreate this condition, I find it hard to believe that this could have been done accidentally. We now have cases to house our fobs, so hopefully it won't happen again. My point was, that I was unaware of this "feature" and I could not find any reference to it in the manual - nor could they, when I showed it to them. Hopefully, more people will report this, and they will rethink their "feature."

I have had this start to happen to my wide's 2017 CR-V Touring. We had had the car almost 2 years (bought it new) and never a problem. Now all of sudden it has happened multiple times in the last 3 weeks. This morning I was able to recreate it on video, with me holding the key fob in a way that shows I am not pressing any buttons. Can we link or upload a video to this web site?

Hello 1HondaFam, I would love to know how to make it happen without pressing any buttons - please, please can you describe it. I want to show the dealership that it can indeed happen without pressing the darn buttons - that provides groundwork the the design/feature is flawed and that customer aren't necessarily to blame. And lays the groundwork for getting resolution!

OK I uploaded it to my YouTube account. https://youtu.be/mY3WDLrNNQc Here are the windows going down all by themselves. Sometimes they go down all the way sometimes they only go down partway. Sometimes you only have to open and close the door once it varies. And sometimes I can open and close the door multiple times and it doesn’t happen. It’s random which indicates there is a defect. It’s also obviously a defect because you’re supposed to push the button and then push it again and hold it to get them to go down. I’m not pushing any buttons. And this is whether I’m holding Key fob1 or key fob2 or both! I explain what’s happening in the video so turn your sound on.

1HondaFam, Thanks for the link and video. I was hoping I could reproduce and demo to our dealership but I haven' been able to reproduce the effect on our 2018 CRV.

2019 crv windows rolling down on their own hours after we purchased the car!!!! This has happened numerous times!! Called salesman and service, who state there is nothing wrong with the car!!! I contacted Honda Automotive and filed a complaint. I have addressed safety concerns as the windows have opened on their own. I drive with my young grandchildren and I’m afraid the windows will malfunction, causing harm. The security of this vehicle is compromised when the windows are down for obvious reasons. My concerns are valid and need to be addressed with the manufacturer. I’m literally sick over this.

I plan on getting rid of my 2018 CRV as soon as I can. I am disgusted that Honda is 1) not admitting there is a problem 2) not taking care of this problem. I will NEVER buy another Honda ever again. I plan to post my disgust on every social media site I can find.

Hello Thor520, Just curious what you are going to replace Honda with? From my generic searches on windows opening by themselves this appears to be an industry wide issue, nor just Honda (BMW,Ford, Nissan, Infiniti, Tesla...) and not just CRV (civic, accord, pilot...). Getting rid of the Honda may simply switch the vehicle but keep the problem. This is appears to be an industry wide issue and how has gone on for at least a decade confounds me. Somewhere, someone must getting big buck to look the other way because consumers shouldn't be left holding the soggy bag.

I just purchased a 2019 CR-V a little over a week ago. It is doing the same thing. I found the windows rolled down this morning.

This happened twice to me during this past week, all four windows down, and yes it had a rained a little bit. I thought it was my fault because I had the flu and chalked it off to being forgetful. But, no one mentioned this: The windows can be operated with the engine off. I am going try the method discussed above and this looks I'll be discussing this with Honda. FYI: Honda CRV 2019

2018 Dec Honda. We are having the same issue. Why can't honda fix this with a software update like Tesla?

I had the same issue when I went to my car. I called Honda and I got the same BS that they never heard of this before, I am taking it in and expect that they will charge for their time. They suggested a "stupid" solution - disable by power windows and moon roof system. That is Honda for you !!!

20

Just purchased a 2019 Civic in late April 2019. Parked it in the driveway. Next day came out and the windows were down and, yes, it was raining.

120

This exact same problem just happened to me on my brand new ‘19 Ridgeline RTLE. I live in Seattle and came out in the morning to a literal inch of water in my cup holders, door wells, and floor mats. The water completely inundated all the dooor electronics and my perforated leather is starting to peel up and wrinkle. This “feature” is absolutely inconceivably useless in my environment, and the fact that you can’t disable it is appalling. I work for a firm that specializing in class action consumer law. I will be pursuing this matter.

Hello Ridgline2019, Sorry you got soaked by this 'feature.' Since this appears to be industry wide there is a large community of people who have be screwed by this feature who would gladly join the class as well as many who haven't incurred actual damage but want it disabled so they don't have to worry about an accidental triggering of this poorly designed/implemented 'feature.' Honda's response to us was don't put you fob in your pocket or purse...

Please have a look at this video on Youtube. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p_A9c8vDuvg Also check your key fob for stuck/jammed buttons. If the Windows are down maybe the unlock button is stuck or pressed in your pocket or handbag. These key fob buttons like any electronic buttons can get stuck over time (Who has ever had a keyboard key stuck/jammed on their PC/laptop? it can happen. Please everyone don't get upset if material things get you upset just sell it if you're not happy enough of threating law suits. No matter what you buy you will encounter some problems, ask the manufacture, not happy with the response SELL IT.

At this point I believe the issue is that the key fobs are overly sensitive and can activate the windows by accidental pressure on the buttons when in pants pockets, purse or wherever. This is a design problem, particularly when coupled with the way the software activates the window with continued pressure on the unlock button! With a fresh battery, my key fob can effectively transmit from inside my house, so I'm unaware if the windows have been activated. For now I've taken out the battery.

130

Confirmed answer: Hold the unlock button down. In my situation FOB in pocket, sat down to start the car and everything opened. First time occurrence so pay attention to placing other items in your pocket if you carry the FOB that way.

I also have a 2017 Honda CRV touring model and windows and sunroof open on its own. I took it back to the dealer several times and wrote to the company and was told it was my fault as I was pressing the buttons on my fob. I was told to keep the fob away from my phone, charge cards and wallet. I have to hang my keys on the outside of my purse or I am afraid the windows will roll down. I feel helpless and will never buy a 4th Honda CRV again or any Honda.

Update: Best link - https://www.rensselaerhonda.com/2017-honda-accord-window-tips/ The article is for a 2017 Accord but I just confirmed the steps with my 2017 CRV Rolling Windows Down With Remote In order to roll down the windows with the key fob just press the unlock button twice. On the second click hold it down. The windows will begin to roll down. The windows will stop rolling down once you release the unlock button so if you want the windows rolled all the way down hold the button down until the windows are all the way down. Watch the video below to see how it’s done. Rolling Windows Up Without Getting Back In The Car To roll the windows back up with out getting back in the car all you have to do is remove the key from the key fob. This is done by sliding the tab over on the back of the fob and then the key will slide right out. Once the key is removed from the key fob insert the key into the door lock on the drivers' door. Twist the key to the lock position and then immediately twist the key a second time but this time hold the key in the lock position and the windows will start to roll up. Keep Holding the key in the lock position until the windows and moonroof are completely shut. Once the windows are shut, remove the key and insert it back into the key fob. And that's it! It’s that simple. Watch the video below to visually see how it works.

Hello Guru9MVJ8, I'm a bit puzzle by the info you posted - the videos address how to intentionally use the down/up features but intentionally using the features isn't the issue. Even some of the comments on the link you provided want to know how to shut this 'feature' off. It is all too easy to unknowingly open your car's windows....

1 people found this helpful.
2,580

Hello GuruLKQ8W, While we are all totally pissed off at Honda for making the poor implementation of this feature our problem, you will need to carefully research any other car you want buy and, at least as things stand now, you will likely find this is a problem with virtually all car manufacturers. That is why a class action lawsuit (involving potentially ALL auto buyers) is needed - when it is more expensive for auto manufacturers to continue abusing consumers than it is to fix the issue consumers will be able to choose which 'features" we want to set as active in our vehicle.

@ GuruBVR2J - I understand the frustration. I had the same reaction as everyone else on the thread. In fact, I did not even see that "feature" in the manual. Prior posts indicate there is nothing we can do, other than ask Honda for a possible software upgrade to the vehicle settings . My post on how to intentionally trigger it was to help others since I had to work at getting the windows to roll down intentionally so I could better understand what may have trigger the inadvertent situation.

Thanks Wyatt, we purchased our 2018 CR-V a year ago this month. Two months later a friend who was thinking about getting the same car discovered the China recall. So I specifically asked about our car and was told it hadn't been recalled but they would let us know it anything came up. When I got a recall notice for replacing part of the air conditioner this winter, I scratched my head because I hadn't heard about that one. But I made the appointment. When i dropped it off I asked our service adviser (who we've known since 2003) about the gas in oil problem. He got this almost embarrassed look on his face and informs me the air conditioning recall is that recall. Then he says John, I know you keep your cars a long time - the recall doesn't include an oil filter change... He didn't have to go any further - I told him I wanted a filter change. I wasn't pissed at him I was pissed at Honda! Why leave the potentially contaminated oil in the potentially contaminated filter after you've done everything else? I was also pissed that Honda hid the seriousness of the recall in something that could seem unrelated to gas in engine oil, I mean heck it would be easy enough to think it was winter and as long as my windows aren't fogging over, this could wait until summer (and end up with a trashed engine.) There seems to be a pattern developing at Honda - maybe Honda's new branding should be "At Honda we do anything in our power to make our screw ups your problem."

1 people found this helpful.
1,920

My recall included the oil and filters change. At least thats what they said. But yes, it had something to do with the A/C. Not sure how it's related to the engine. Getting details from the dealer is like pulling teeth.

I'm currently experiencing the same problem with my 2018 Honda Hatchback. Same scenario that everyone else has detailed in the thread, HONDA refuses to take ownership of the glitch. I agree that there should be a class action lawsuit filed against them for their negligence. Does anyone know how to get the attention of a firm that would be interested in taking the case? Should we file a petition of some sort? We need to come together to make them pay. This is costing HONDA customers a lot of money and it's not right.

1,920

If you want to get attention of a firm, then google someone who already is filing class action lawsuit against Honda or in the business of suing car manufacturers. You can try https://Harmanlaw.com they are in GA already involved in class action against Honda CRV. But there maybe other hungrier ones.

I just had a situation where I parked my 2018 CR-V Touring at work and went into the building (I have the walk away auto door lock featured enabled on my car.) About 5 minutes later, a coworker parked next to my car in the parking lot and noticed that as she was getting out of her car, the rear tail gate of my CR-V opened on its own. I was inside my work building, at least 500 feet away, so there is no way I accidentally pushed/engaged the key fob. This new “glitch” coupled with the “gas in oil” engine problem (which my Honda service dealer has denied is happening when I told him there was a strong smell of gas in the car’s cabin) and a constant “blue screen” appearing on the entertainment system (that issue has been happening since a week after purchasing the vehicle new in November of 2017), I’m extremely disappointed in Honda and this vehicle.

I am so pissed off. I've had my CR-V 2 years now and never heard of this problem. Tonight Houston had a huge storm, lots of flooding, over 5 inches of rain in two hours in my area. My house is prone to flood so I was trying to get everything off the floor. My FOB was in my pocket as usual. I go out to the car several hours later, my entire car is soaked. All the windows are down, all the cupholders are totally full of water, my seats, carpet, everyhint totally drench. All the windows were down and sunroof open. I was baffled, I hadn;t used the windows or sunroof in day, I have no idea how this could happen until I found this thread. THIS IS INSANSE. I was not told about this 'feature' when I bought the car, I looked through the most recent manual and I don't see it listed there. There HAS to be a way to turn this off. My car interior is drench with 3+ inches of rain because of this 'hidden feature' . HONDA - FIX THIS.

I found out this morning this same issue. It was raining, but not badly, so I was lucky. As well, nobody went into the car to steal whatsoever. Honda CRV 2018. I bought it last year and this is the first time it happened to me.

4 days later, my car smells horrible. Ive steam cleaned, vacummed and now have inudstrial blower fans going through the car hoping the smell will go away. I went to the dealer and told them about what happen, they had no answers and not much sympathy - told me to call Honda. I called Honda and they took my 'feature reccomendation' that you should be able to turn off the feature. Still think its insane that a feature like this is so hidden, not even in the printed guide that came with my car, Unfortunately, most people that experience this problem are not left with the damages I have had - so there isn't much case to try to sue Honda to get it fixed.

This has happened twice on my 2018 CRV. You don’t have to let your vehicle be trashed by this problem. I just removed the fuses for my four windows and the moon roof until I can sort this out. The fuse puller is in the engine compartment fuse box and the fuses I pulled are in the under the dash fuse box. I am going to contact Honda and Consumer Reports tomorrow.

Man everybody is overreacting. It's a dope ass feature. Great to air out the car on hot days before you get there and you can also roll all 4 windows back up without getting back in your car and turning it on. Everybody who says it happens and you didnt touch the fob...lies. you all hit the unlock button either sat on it, kids played with it, dog. Its software that doesnt have a bug in it. YOU ALL MADE THE MISTAKE OF HITTING YOUR FOB ON ACCIDENT GET OVER IT, ITS NOT THE CAR ITS THE IGNRANT DRIVERS! SHEESH

A rather inappropriate reply and out of line calling people liars. Your experience is yours, ours is ours. And, learn how to spell before you put people down. And maybe you can roll up the windows from a distance, I for one, cannot do so without restarting the car. Now learn how to communicate politely or keep your comments to yourself.

The problem is that this happens when your keys are in your pocket or purse or whatnot - AND ITS NOT A DOCUMENTED FEATURE! Its nowhere on the keychain that you can hit this and its not in the printed incustruction manual that comes in the car. I never knew about this feature until my car was full of over 3 inches of rain. Most of us are not arguing if it should be a feature or not - but it should be a feature that is documented, it should be a feature that could be turned off in settings because - as many people have experience here, it can be done on accident which can lead to negative consequences (flooded cars, items stolen in cars, etc).

Same problem on our 2017 CRV. First time in 2 years. Happened to my brother's Pilot, too, and it got soaked overnight. My 1947 Hudson does not have this problem... ;-)

1 people found this helpful.

Happened on our 2018 CRV. First time on the Alaska Ferry and then again today in the garage. After looking at this website, I deliberately used the fob function to open the windows. It’s not that easy to do. Inclined to think it’s a fob malfunction causing the windows to inadvertently open. Also having problems with the power reduced function and odd low level beeping. This is my first Honda, but if this keeps up, will be my last !

10

I purchased a 2019 CRV-touring model less than a month ago. I came out of work today to see all my windows half-way down & the sunroof cracked open. It had sprinkled a little but thankfully the inside wasn’t wet. I keep my fob in my purse. I hadn’t taken it out. My purse was untouched on the floor for hours. I supposed it could have been bumped on my walk from car to work or back. However this has never happened with any of my numerous other vehicles. I am now paranoid that it will happen again. This is definitely something that you should be able to disable.

@ GuruSSkSC Dude you’re extremely out of line and very rude. But mainly ignorant! I’m only commenting because you are highly mistaken. Explain this please. My mother was asleep and she sleeps soundly. She was dead asleep and WOKE up the next morning to find all four of her windows down at equal levels on her 2017 Honda CR V. We both are being victimized by a malicious key logging hacker who has been harassing and stalking me since October of last year so he may have done something to remotely to her car. I happened to find on Google where someone looked up how to get windows down without a key fob. We’re pretty certain this cyber psycho lives locally around me. Yet not even the FBI has been able to stop the insanity. But as for my mother pushing the dumb key fob buttons herself.....that is absolutely impossible. Once she’s in bed she stays in bed! To call us liars tho. Get a clue. You might be one but my mother and the majority of these people deffo are not. Just because others have different stories that differ from your encounters do not make them liars. You have no reason or right to comment so rudely without knowing the facts of what others have experienced. This certain Honda is my mother’s second CRV and her first one only had constant problems with the AC staying cool. This one I’ve despised since day one. But she’s 75 years old and she’s too old to trade this one in she says. Plus she’s only had it for a year or so. The AC is already going out. And it’s so small. She regrets buying it. And now this happening. Jeebus. What next?!

This just happened to me today as I walked away from my 2017 Honda CRV when I parked at a recreational area to go rock climbing. As I walked away from the car I must have accidentally hit “unlock” instead of lock, and I guess I held it too long because when I came back two hours later my windows were down about 4 inches and someone had gotten into my car and stolen all the credit cards from my wallet which was in the the glove compartment. My bad for hitting unlock, but I had no idea there was a “venting” feature mixed in there that invited people into my car. In an hour they had spent 8K at an iPhone store before heading to Target.

2 people found this helpful.

This happened to me last night, locked my car and returned to find all four windows down. ????? Bizarre, I had not touched the keys since locking it.

20

Has happened on our new 2019 CRV twice. Both times it had rained. Whether or not this is a good feature is debatable. The fact that it cannot be disabled is downright stupid. That it is still going on two years after it was reported (on Hondas anyway) says something. I'm beginning to see in the corporate world that many decisions that the customer finds downright ridiculous are based on protecting the company from lawsuits, regardless of how much it inconveniences the customer. Then again there is always a lawyer ready to help a disgruntled customer to get as much out of the company as possible.

2 people found this helpful.

Two days ago, this happened to my 2017 CR-V. I parked my car in a hotel parking lot. When I stepped out of hotel and saw all windows open, my first thought was a break-in. But all my belongings were untouched. This is very scary. After reading all comments, it looks like the unlock button might be accidentally touched. This is a bad feature and Honda needs to fix it.

10

It just happened to our car---windows all went down in the middle of the night. Does taking the battery out of the fob prevent this from happening again?

1 people found this helpful.

It happened to me too last night. Left the car parked in my driveway fine, came out this morning (in the rain) to all my windows rolled partway down and my sunroof opened partway too. This is after I've also had that glitch happening where my screen goes crazy while I'm driving. Could this be an electrical problem or a computer coding issue?

50

When someone say you may hit the key fob by accident, that is BS. I have 2017 crv. Car Window came down by itself a couple of times. One time I was in the car when it happened. At the time my key fob was covered and couldn’t be used. Honda service dealer couldn’t find the problem. Honda company was contacted and couldn’t do anything. What can we do next?

2 people found this helpful.
50

The problem is that no one can prove this malfunction happen because on one will know when it will happen again. That is why honda refuses to do anything. Is there anything we can do?

3 people found this helpful.

Happened to me with fob in pocket. Was able to replicate. I wonder what the distance is before the fob stops signaling? Going to airport today and thinking I will only bring the removable key not the fob which I assume will eliminate the issue (though an inconvenience).

190

What's crazy about the distance is that it seems the door auto lock feature has a extremely short distance, if I get out of the car and shut the door and walk away at a briskly pace the car beeps rapidly and does not auto- lock. It's pretty annoying as my other cars auto lock just fine when I exit fast. I've repeated that this is consistent among other Honda CRVs... But the distance on this window roll down feature is amazingly far which makes make sense.

I called Honda - after raising hell at the dealership they gave a number for submitting issues. I called, they politely noted my complaint and desire to be able disable this 'feature'. They gave me a ticket number for the issue and a year later and a half later - nada, nothing, zip. I suspect that cooperate views resolving the problem as just too costly and the industry is colluding to ignore it. Since this appears to impact virtually even make and goes back a decade or more we're talking about a mind boggling number of vehicles and each day it is ignored, the numbers grow.

190

I went to dealer, called Honda twice - they take information and say they will 'consider it for future versions'...

10

This happened to me for the second time on my 2019 CRV. First time during a very heavy rain and last night during a snow storm. My car was a mess both times. Service at the local Honda didn't know about it?????. Will do what I can to prevent it by taking keys out of my pocket.

I live near the carjack capital of America, urban Newark, NJ and it is only a matter of time until my car is stolen unless I become an ex-Honda owner quickly.

Honda is not helpful with this. After opening a complaint on line, a customer service person called and after looking in the manual, said that she sees that this is a feature, but not sure how to turn it off. “Manager” suggested I visit the dealer instead. I will not be wasting my time by visiting a dealer! If the “feature” can be turned off, let us know, otherwise I am on team #NoMoreHonda unless I hear this is fixed. If I want to cool my car, I can remote start it!

I just purchased a ‘19 CR-V LX AWD yesterday, Dec 31. 79 miles on it, found all my windows open this morning. Wow, Honda has known about this issue? Hard to believe.

30

The answer is to be very careful not to touch the middle button on your key Fob when locking your doors. Holding down the unlock button for more than 10 seconds causes the windows and sunroof to open. I believe this is a mistake made by Honda in the design of the car and they are trying to fake us out by claiming it's an beneficial feature. The lying continues if you look at pg. 128 in your owners manual. I live 23 miles from the carjack capital of America (Newark, NJ) and the penalty for parking with windows open could be quite serious.

I have a 2018 CRV and was shocked when I first noticed the problem listed in this thread. Here’s my solution. It sucks to have to do this, but if you lock your door manually, it won’t engage your fob and thus have the chance to activate this stupid feature. Because you have to hit the lock button and then hold it down. That can happen in your pocket. But so far, it hasn’t happened to me after I locked the door manually. This problem and Honda’s apparent lack of concern might drive me to a Toyota after my lease expires.

For what it's worth, it just happened to me this morning, for the first time. 2018 CR-V. Thank you, everyone who took the time to post their experiences. Very helpful to know it is not just me.

Me again - I called Honda of Danbury's Service Dept. (which is very good, BTW. I've been dealing with them happily for almost 30 years). The gentleman explained "this is a feature, not a bug." (Supposedly, it helps to air out your car in the summer time when it gets hot inside.) I asked if I could bring the car in to have this "feature" removed, and he explained that there is no way they can do anything about it. It's been on Honda's since 2003, he said. He suggested I buy a key fob cover, to make it harder to push the buttons accidentally, so I just ordered one from Amazon for $10. (search "Key Cover Case Holder for Honda CRV (your model year) " and you should get a number of choices. These covers don't prevent the signal from transmitting, it seems - they just make it harder for the buttons to be punched by mistake. I don't know if it will work or not, but $10 is cheap insurance if it actually prevents the car from getting snowed in or rained in.

This happened to us last night while visiting/babysitting our grandsons. It had been raining all day so, no, we had no reason to open the windows and had not used the sunroof ever since buying the car (2017 CRV). We came out at 11:30 pm and all 4 windows and sun roof were half open. Car seats were soaked, and that was with just a light rain. I googled and found this thread, much to my surprise. Key fob was in my husband's pocket so it is possible he sat on it INSIDE THE HOUSE. That had to be at least 50 yards from the car, as we had parked on the streeet, not on their driveway, and he was in the farthest corner from the front door.

Well 3 yrs of Honda customers complaining and it’s still an issue. Our brand new 2020 had all windows and sunroof 1/2 opened this morning.

Hello Gordie, There dozens, no hundreds, of vehicle owners who have been getting the bums rush by dealerships when they ask how to disable it. We're flat out told so sad too bad, you're screwed. Please tell us how - I for one looked and didn't see it before going to the dealer. If you can tell us how you'd be a hero to a whole lot of people.

190

Yeah, no only is the dealer no hope - it isn't in the original owners manual of t he 2017 CR-V (it is in the revised manual you can get online). It can't be disable - its apparently a seperate controller.system than what interacts with the head unit etc. I would recommend everyone here also call Honda and record a complaint - if enough complain maybe they will do something for future models, but the hardware they would have to replace to make the feature available on our models would not be worth their cost apparently.

I just bought a brand new 2019 CRV 3 weeks ago! All four windows rolled down in midnight. Now three of them cannot close. Can anybody tell me how can I close them. I am driving at 25 degree F with the windows open on the highway!!!

Hello GuruRK2HR, While no one on this forum is surprised that your window went down without you knowingly opening them - not being able to close them will raise a few eyebrows. So, here's some pure speculation on my part - they are frozen in place and a few hours in a heated garage would allow you to close them. Alternatively, if, on close inspection you cans see where they are iced in place, you might be able to use a hair dryer in an unheated garage to free them up. But given the car is new my first choice would be back to the dealer to have them address the problem. As and FYI, the reasoning behind my guess is that I have had windows iced closed - even after scraping the ice off the windows enough remained at the door/window junctures that the windows couldn't open. Good luck, please let us know the outcome.

Not only have my windows and sunroof been open but so has the tailgate. I've come out of the grocery store or shopping mall and the car is open with packages in it. So far nothing has been taken. Plus, the doors do not auto close or open upon touching the handle. The key fob is not the issue as I have held it in my hand until out of range and still had the tailgate open when returning to the car. Going to trade it in this spring.

For what it is worth, I've just had my second incidence of my 2018 CR-V opening the windows and sunroof automatically during the night. The first time was Jan 17 2020, and today (March 7 2020) was the second time it happened. The service folk at Danbury (CT) Honda told me in January it was "a feature, not a bug," and was designed to help cool the car before entry. I asked how to remove this "feature," and they said they couldn't do it, but I could buy a key fob cover to help protect from inadvertent button pushing. I did so, and put covers on both sets of keys, to no avail, obviously, because the same thing just happened. Does anyone know how to deal with this in a better manner? Much obliged if someone can tell us how to stop this from happening again.

Honda stop saying it’s a human error or a faulty key fob.My wife came out,it’s 30 degrees, and all the windows on her 2018 CRV were down. The keys were on the piano not in her pocket.I have a 06 Ridgeline with the same feature and it’s never happened so revert back to the original program or recall the cars.Solved.

I posted months ago that this happened to me. I really don’t think I touched the remote. I love my CRV but this will always be in the back of my mind. I’ve had 30+ new vehicles in the past 35 years. This has never happened on my Cadillacs, Buicks, Acura’s or Chevy/GM vehicles. It’s not a feature I even want to have. There should be a way to disable it. I lay in bed listening to the pouring rain, wondering if my sunroof & windows opened themselves. Often I get up in the middle of the night to check. Or if I’m shopping & take purchases out to the vehicle I worry they’ll be stolen because the windows roll themselves down. This will be the only thing keeping me from getting another Honda in the future. Please find a fix or a way to disable it.

I think we all need to start posting on Honda's Facebook page. This last post should be frightening to them. I already have forwarded this thread to a cousin who works at Consumer Reports, but only when this issue goes viral do I expect Honda to do anything about it. Go to the Honda FB page and post your comments. The corporate page, not a specific CR-V page. It has the Honda logo.

Hello CRV_owener_in_CT, We've double cased ours and haven't had and issue since. The downside of this is FOB features are inaccessible so becomes pretty much useless for anything other than the proximity unlock and starting. First we put them in a softer cover (like the Coolbestda Smart Key Fob Skin Cover Case) which covers the keys and somewhat recesses them. And then we put the covered FOB in a stiffer case (like the REEGE Car Key Chain Premium Leather Car Key Holder with Zipper for Key FOB.) We've been good for 14 months but we can't use the other FOB features without removing it from the stiffer case. I almost few sorry for the service rep who commented on the nice case when I took it in - I didn't mean to unload on him (he's a nice guy - has greeted me for almost 20 years.) He and a few other reps and customers found out what I though of the 'Feature' If double casing doesn't do the trick (I read somewhere on one of these forums the some new FOB can be defective - i.e. have sticking keys.) I'd be inclined to get in the dealership face and demand replacement FOBs

I removed the plastic unlock/window button from my key fob so I cannot accidentally activate the window. I can unlock the car by using my fingernail to depress the underlying switch. Not ideal, but no issues now for the past year.

I have a 2020 CRV. Just bought it. It happened to me and I thought I'd gone nuts. I found this page and tried to duplicate the problem. I got it to happen 3 times after pressing once, twice, holding, etc. the unlock button. No consistency. We have 4 inches of rain/hour here in Augusta sometimes. Not funny.

2019 CRV owner here in Philly, just happened to us for the first time and we had a bad rain storm of course!

Just bought a 2017 CR V Touring, I have not experienced all my windows going down yet, but my tailgate does open on its own intermittently. I am very disappointed to find this site with all these complaints. I will be calling Honda Corporate ASAP. Let's hope for a class action law suite.

Looks like Honda Redesigned the key Fob for 2020. I have the Honda CR-V EXL. To use the vent feature now you hit unlock once then Hit it again 3 times and it will vent the windows. OR if you hold it constantly on the the third press the windows will keep going down until you release or they are all the way down/open.

AHH I bought a 2017 on Monday and it just happened. Keys were on counter and hadn’t been touched in hours. The carfax had two previous owners for ~ a year each so now I’m wondering if they ditched it because of this. It’s a HUGE issue. How is there not a recall??

Just bought a 2019 CR-V LX JULY 16, 2020....THIS MORNING SEPTEMBER 9,2020 THREE OF MY WINDOWS WENT DOWN HALF WAY JUST AFTER I HIT THE UNLOCK BUTTON AND OPENED THE REAR PASSENGER DOOR. SCARED ME!! GOOGLED THE PROBLEM AND IT BROUGHT ME TO THIS SITE. I TOO WILL BE CONTACTING HONDA...THIS IS DEFINITELY A NEED FOR RECALL AND A COMPLETE FIX!!!! I SEARCHED FOR FOUR YEARS FOR THIS CAR PURCHASE AND I FEEL BLINDSIDED BY HONDA!!!

It is a normal feature of most hondas with a key fob. If you press the open button once an drhen again holding the button in all windows will open as long asyou hold the button It is for warm places to cool down tour car.

10

I was driving my 2016 CR-V EX today and my fob was in the back seat. My rear passenger window randomly rolled down. I noticed it right away because I was traveling on the freeway at 70 mph and the wind noise was significant. Both hands were on the steering wheel, so it's not possible that I could have inadvertently hit the controls on the door panel.

1 people found this helpful.

I am told by Honda that it is pressure on the key fob but iff so, how come I cannot replicare it by pressing the unlock no matter how lomg I press it. Same with lock? It has to be a design fault.

120

Honda seems intent on convincing us that this "key fob window opening problem" is a "feature" and not a "bug." If it is a feature, then the owner should be able to turn it off. If it can't be turned off, then it is not a feature, really, is it?

3 people found this helpful.

Just had this exact same thing on my 2016 HR-V, and there is no way that I accidentally pressed any buttons. One key fob was at my brother’s house 4 miles away, and mine was in my pocket, at work 7.5 miles away (a colleague and I car-share, and it is my week to be ferried). Had a text from my wife to say that the hazard lights just flashed. Luckily, she went out to have a look and found all four windows half down and the roof was open. Rain was forecast for later, so I had to go home and close it all up again. I have read all through this thread and can see that there is no way that Honda is going to do anything to fix this. Would be far too expensive for them, so was wondering if anyone had any ideas of how to deal with it? I’m not talking about holding Honda to account (although they need to be). I am more interested in the immediate concerns for protecting my money. I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on having an auto electrician bypass the relevant fuses to a dash mounted switch system. Then all you have to do is remember to press the button each time you get out… or even just when it looks like rain. Also, I was wondering if anyone knew of an insurance that would cover against loss caused by this.

Hello Martin, I'm going to go 'off topic" a bit (in part because I've recently been reading about other electroninc quirks with honda vehichles and battery issues). By any chance does the car still have the original battery? If so it might be worth having it checked. The reason I'm suggesting this is that I don't know how sensitive the controls might be to lower voltages and if the car battery has seen better days, who knows. Good Luck

1 people found this helpful.

To GuruBVR2J: That has crossed my mind and I have also seen other posts that suggest this too. I'm not sure if the battery is new or not, as I have only owned the car for a couple of months, but I almost dismissed the idea when I read somewhere that someone had just bought a brand new CR-V and it happened to them. That doesn't mean it's not the battery, but it felt unlikely. When I parked the car before it happened to me, the engine switched off automatically and I sat listening to the radio for a few minutes. The lights and window demisters were on and then I had an alert with the symbol instructing me to start the engine (the picture of the clutch pedal). At that point I just shut it all down and locked up and went into my house. The battery could have been run right down and all I needed to do was let the alternator do its thing for a couple of minutes. I am now going to get the battery health checked and see if that points me in the same direction. I don’t really want to start wiring in manual switches etc, so I hope this is it. Thanks for your thoughts. Really makes sense. I will report back 

I just had this happen to my 2017 Accord. When I came home on 12/24/20, the car was completely closed and locked. I don't even open any windows in December, never mind the sunroof, which I haven't used since the first week I purchased the car 4 years ago. I live in a condo and had a knock on my door at 11 am Christmas mornings saying all my windows and sunroof were open. We had a very bad rain/wind storm in NJ last night and everything was soaked. I can't understand how this could have happened as, I have a ring attached to my FOB and it was on my finger - my hand was no where near the buttons. The keys were on my kitchen counter all night, and even if something was pressing on top of the FOB, I can't see how it could have transmitted to the car, that was parked at the other side of the building. It would have to transmit through my condo, a hallway and another unit. I called the local police, because I thought someone was trying to break into my car, and that's the first time I heard about this "feature". I called my insurance agent and being it was Christmas I won't know anything until Monday. When I called my Honda dealer he was no help at all, and said he couldn't even help dry the car out until Wednesday and they would have to remove everything from inside costing thousands. His advice wait until I talk to the insurance company. I have spent the last 2 days, trying to dry out the car, with wet vac, towels and leaving the heater and defroster on for hours at at time. It seems to be almost dry as the wet vac isn't picking up any more water, and when I press paper towels on different spots, including in between the seats and carpet. it's coming up dry, although the car still feels damp. I'll run the heater and defroster again tomorrow, and have placed damp rid containers all over the inside of the car. I just hope the car will be OK, as I don't think the insurance will accept the claim. Honda needs to fix this, at least to be able to turn the "feature" off. Has anyone started a lawsuit for this?

1 people found this helpful.

This just happened to my 2019 CR-V, but there was a foot of snow on the sunroof and at least 3 inches on the windows. Luckily I was close by when it happened. I was able to get the shopvac out and suck up the snow before it started melting. But it was still a huge job.

10

I have the same problem on my 2019. I came out to go to work with all windows and sunroof opened. I leave for work while it is still dark. That was a safety issue to me. I felt someone had been in my car. Lucky it was good weather that night. The next time was at work I came out at the end of the day and found snow in my car from windows and sunroof opening. I work in a basement where I can’t even use my self starter. This problem to should be fixed immediately. Of course the other problem even in good weather is the satellite keeps disconnecting.

Since starting this string, I've had literally hundreds of responces with the same problem of opening windows. If you look at related strings, hundreds more cases are reprted. I've spoken to two dealers who don't seem to grasp how significant this is. I contacted Honda with a list of some of these cases (probably 100 last year). The answer is always the same - auto opening windows are a desirable option. They too don't grasp the random and accidental openings and refuse to do anything about it. Even when I said this would be my last Honda unless they address the issue, their response suggested they really don't give a s%*t. I'm serious about it being my last honda

I think this issue was fixed starting with the 2020 model. Now to do the windows down and open sun roof you have to click the lock button 3 times holding it down on the third click. I have had my 2020 CR-V EX-L 7 months now and no problems with it so far. But Honda should have fixed the problem in the previous years

3 people found this helpful.

Just had this happen last night here in NYC with a rainstorm no less. It’s a real safety issue. My car could have been stolen or had someone pilfer the interior. Luckily only had to soak up 3 towels worth of water and still have wet seats. I hope it doesn’t mold!

HI, It happened to my 2018 CRV last night. FedEX person told me that my car windows are down. Car is almost soaked in the rain from last evening. My question is why Honda is not fixing this or making this feature to be disabled by users? Any one contacted Honda directly? Dealers are useless because most of them wants to sell the car, not to service (my apologies to sincere dealers out there -- a few of them).

40

Hi all I've read through 2000 something messages here and very surprised that no one has come across the same core problem. The key fob for most of you (like myself) is a red herring. I purchased two Silent Pocket Faraday bags which block the RF signals from the key fobs, the windows still rolled down. Additionally I noticed while driving that the car would intermittently unlock. Turns out the problem was the remnants of a dealer installed KARR security system. I declined the "upsell" of the security system at purchase but apparently many of the dealers pre-wire this way so they can use common key fob to control cars on lot. When I declined the upsell, they left in the hackjob aftermarket wiring that ties to all these key car functions and took out the control unit. The dealer that removed it for me is different than the one I purchased from. I'm going to make some noise with American Honda and purchase dealer about it. Cheers if you had the patience to make it this far! It's been several days now and no issues at all after it had become almost constant. This is a 2017 CRV and no problems until 3.5 years after purchase.

This is a feature that is designed to let the hot air out in the summer when the car gets baked in the sun. Its pretty useful if you know how to activate it. If you don't like it, I think there is away to disable that function.

2,580

Frugalbass, I am Flaberbassed. People owning Hondas and several other makes have been requesting, begging, pleading, screaming for a fix. Complaints of this behavior of vehicle windows goes back 10 or more years. And you repeat the given justification for this feature and then fliply tell is upi THINK, there is a way to disable the function. Have you evern read this t hread? Please, please tell us how you think we can disable it, car owners want to know.

1 people found this helpful.

Correct. The 2017 CRV does NOT have that option as part of current vehicle settings. It remains a "feature."

1 people found this helpful.

Once my the auto window feature begins to happen. The normal functions cease to work. Hitting the door lock or unlock buttons no longer work. Infuriating. Anyone know how to return the fob to the usual functions after this auto window nonsense has been activated?

20

I have a 2019 Honda CR-V. My windows go down by pressing the unlock button on the key FOB three times and holding the button down the third time. Someone (somewhere above) suggested this was a "fix". Yet my windows open unintentionally. As many have complained, I want to disable the feature but there seems to be no way to do this. I found my windows open after being away for a week. Luckily my tools and boat parts were all still in the car and the car was dry. It seems like would be simple for Honda to provide a software update to fix this. I am considering a class-action lawsuit to force them to do this.
