Are chains recommended for a 2017 Subaru Forester for winter driving?

Don't know if I would go with chains on something that small. I would look into cables (wire rope), but a good pair that won't break apart and damage body.
No chains only cables and they need to be the super low clearance 'S' type. Subaru does not actually recommend cables but if you need them use the type they specify in the owners manual. I believe they also only spec them on one axle. Which one I don't remember off hand so Read The Manual!!!
Good quality winter tires will be your friend. If you live where there is snow and ice all winter get a dedicated set of winter only tires.
I have never yet used cables on my Subaru's and I drive in some really nasty winter conditions. I carry them just in case and my state requires them to enter certain areas.
For optimum traction in the winter I opted to switch over to studs in the winter. I can stop on a dime with them, take off without sliding sideways. Good snow tires and an AWD Subaru are nice for Tahoe Winters but studded snow tires for myself is a must. Once you have studs you don't want to be without them- next best thing would be a snow cat ! Also, in my state we are required to start chains all year around as well. Never chained up any Subaru I owned.
