If its the correct cable and you removed the old one, it seems to be in the same place as the old one was then it is just hard to do but possible.
Hey lincolnscott49, Thank you very much for the answer. I did not remove it. it became loose and the speedometer gauge was moving erratic from one end to the other. When I checked the cable I realized that it is loose. I tried about two hours to push it back to engage with no success.

I would check the end that goes in the tranny as it may be a worn out nylon gear.
On my 72 El Camino which I have been driving for 48 years, I will have to change my cable, It is getting noisy behind the speedometer. It has acted up at times over the years, but the noise and jumping speedo needle would stop in a minute or two, the speedo square end is worn on the corners, You cannot reach up behind the dash ; you have to remove the dash pad on top and then remove the screws in the dash assembly housing the speedometer and pull it toward the steering wheel about 3 inches, slip your hand in and unscrew it. have done it a couple of times over the years to grease the cable and change out burnt out idiot lights. It is a pain in the a## but you can do it,
