77 El Camino heat aif flow but no defrost

the heater and vent in my 77 El Camino (Classic trim) have air flow but when I
switch to defrost the airflow remains at the heater vent output (at the floor)

Found the problem: There is a spring that keeps tension on the directional door. the vacuum mechanism that shuts the door and directs airflow from the floor vent to the defroster could not overpowering the spring and so the door remains in the heater position. A slight adjustment to the spring and now the door shuts correctly and directs airflow to the defroster
