Esc service light on
Asked by Lucy2019 Dec 16, 2018 at 09:36 AM about the 2018 Chevrolet Equinox 1.5T LT FWD
Question type: Maintenance & Repair
I have a new, only 5700 miles, 2018 Chevy Equinox. I was stopped at a stop
sign and when I tried to continue moving the engine seemed to lock and the
car died. The engine light came on along with “Engine power is reduced” and
“Service ESC”. It is now sitting on a side street. It is Sunday so the
dealership is closed. I need to know if there is something that I can do or
does it need to be towed.

My wifes car 2018 Equinox just did the same thing and it happens to be a Sunday, but it’s still running and hopefully we can make it home! Just recently her transmission cooler line busted and the dealer ship was hinting it could be a critter...? Yeah right now let’s see what this leads to!
Same thing here. Brand new 2020 Equinox Premier with 95 miles. Thanks God the car did not stop. This Equinox is a replacement of a brand new Malibu 2018 through Lemon Law. Chevrolet is really declining.
Okay, so my wife’s 2018 Equinox service light traction control and check engine light all came in again for the 3rd time. We have turned it in for the the same issue and I’ve reached out to GM explaining that my wife’s car is no longer safe because it shuts down on the highway. It’s going on 4 weeks they’ll have had the car and not a mention of what could be wrong with it. The dealership “Capital Chevrolet in Austin” hasn’t even contacted GM back as well..? We have a loaner car, but that’s not what I’m paying for! Any advice would really help and my wife’s Equinox only has 38,000 approximately.
I’m experiencing the same thing with my brand new 2020Equinox Premier. While driving the traction and stability lights came on along with the ESC service light. Also my Lane assist stopped working. It stayed on for at Least 30 mins until I turned off the car and restarted.
Also a 2020 Equinox here...less than 2k miles on it. About a month after I got it, this same "Service ESC" thing happened. I let it go because it did go off once the car was turned off for a bit (went into store and came out maybe 30 mins later). But now today, it happened TWICE. Have appt at the dealership tomorrow...will update once I get more feedback.
FYI...two hours at the dealership and was told they found a computer update. Paperwork shows reprogramming of Electronic Brake Control Module was completed. Only time will tell if this will happen again...
20Nox, have you had any issues with it once they reprogrammed the Electronic Brake Control Module? Thanks

If you take it back to the dealership and they get the C0800 error code, it’s a battery issue. Just went through this myself.
GuruPT7V2... knock on wood, but no. No further issues to date!!
My Equinox 2018 has been in the shop for over 3 month is the ESC light and the steering will locks up. The issue hasn't been fixed and GMC isn't doing anything to fix the issue. I will be going through the BBB to file a complaint. This is my first and last Car from Chevy> I purchase the care from Chevy on Phillips in Jacksonville Florida. They don't even want to fix the problem so i had to take it to a Nimnicht dealership to get it looked at. They were amazing but no one knows how to fix the issue. How do you make a product that you can fixed
I just got an Equinox 2020 almost 2 months ago and it has 2,000miles and the ESC light came up. It's Saturday night and the dealer is closed. Hopefully they will be able to fix it on Monday. Too much money for a brand new car star giving me problems.
My 2020 Equinox 1200 miles same issue - was driving and Service ESC came up and the lights on the dash. Called 3 weeks until it can be looked at. Service said that it has to do with the -36 and moisture in the air that causes the sensor to ready wrong -
Not an answer, However, The Same issue here, I have a 2019 Equinox, Less than 2 years old. Today the Service ESC, and Check Engine light came on. Well, of course it's Saturday, and the dealership is closed. So on Monday hopefully they tell us the issue. I am wanting to know is there any recalls on these new Equinox. It's ridiculous for a vehicle less than a month, Year, Two Years to be having this much problems. We just got it back from the dealership less than a month ago for This Loud Rattling Sound the car would make while driving. (Vehicle was bought here in Fayetteville, NC Reed Lallier Chevrolet).

not an answer. i have 2018 equinox. about 15k miles. my ESC light came on along with traction control engine and wheel slip. called dealer they said it could be from running through water. but it was a dry day. it came on twice during my drive and cleared it self after a few miles. did it again the next day. hasnt done it in over a week got hit with it yesterday. i have appt for mar 14th. hope it is ok till then.
I have a 2018 equinox as well yesterday in the highway it started beeping and telling me the all wheel drive was shutting off and to service esc. Then all the lights came on, traction, wheel slip and check engine. Of course it’s a Saturday any luck with answers??
Answer for our problem and hopefully yours with the ESC, traction control lights. So my wife’s Equinox was taken into the dealership the last time I posted and they kept the vehicle for about another month. I had gotten GMC customer service involved because for 2 weeks I had heard nothing from dealer. They finally got with GM techs to see what could be the cause of all the trouble and ended up replacing the Engine Harness. So far it fixed the problem. I got a lemon law layer involved “Alex@FileLemonLaw.com” because it seemed like my calls meant nothing, but when I got a lawyer involved I finally got updates from dealer. Wife’s car mileage is about 37500 only and hopefully no more problems. I’ll definitely keep everyone updated if any issues occur.
GuruR6RVB: Update: vehicle is still in shop, hubby got a call this week, now! There is 3 different things wrong with the vehicle, Oil leak from somewhere underneath, the other 2 issues, they don't know yet! Well, the Service ESC - On, Stabili Track -off, Check Engine light is on.
2020 Nox 1300 miles.Service ESC just came on. Friday afternoon. They can't look at it till Tuesday. Not happy after reading all these.
So far so good with my wife’s 2018 Equinox. Although she hasn’t been driving everyday to and from work due to this coved-19. The oil leak was a common issue our service writer informed us about and they did replace the oil pan. Will definitely keep everyone updated. In the future we’ll never buy another Equinox!
Update: 2019 Equinox Drives like a champ now, after being in the shop here in (Fayetteville) Reed Lallier Dealership for 3 months. They had to tear the whole vehicle apart, (PER GM). Just for them to tell us it was because, of a (LOOSE PISTON RING) which did not make any sense. However, the vehicle has been running well since we got it out of the shop. Due to the COVID-19 we haven't gone on any long trips, but we drive the vehicle to the supermarket or take the vehicle for drives around the neighborhood so we don't end up getting flat tires. There has been no issues, but we are watching very carefully this time around. Yes, This is our last Chevrolet Vehicle, as I do love them too many early issues before you even get to enjoy all the features of your new Equinox. Everyone Stay Safe, and Be Blessed!
2018-2020 FIX here https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2020/MC- 10171897-9999.pdf Just had the dealer update the module software.

Not an answer. Used two different general search engines online looking for 2019 Equinox ESC alert info & found this page and bunches of others. My 2019 is a lease that ends in about 6 months.Alert occurred on weekday morning, cold engine- but I only drive 5 miles to work and this happened about 3 blocks from my house. Called right away for dealer service appt, got car in right away. Two days now. Dealer serv. advisor had my phone notes, took my key and said this is often cracked spark plug(s), common problem (YIKES!). but mine isn't. Checking for clogged fuel injectors- not happening. Next (today) rerun diagnostics on cold engine. Looking to see if cracked piston- still not heard back. Hmmm. Haven't found any recalls or dealer service tech. bulletins on this. Stepson, experienced mech. , is also looking thru his contacts to see if any other Official info available. Frustrating for sure. Anybody filed NHSA claims?
I've had this happen a few times and was solved each time by cleaning the front/rear/side view cameras. I'm betting it's something to do with the car not being able to see it's surroundings - so the default is to turn off safety features.

Not an answer. 2018 Chevy Equinox stopped working while at a stop in parking lot. ESC light and engine light came on. I could not restart the vehicle after 3 attempts and then, about 10 minutes later while trying to reach the dealership, I was able to restart the car. I was able to drive the vehicle 5 miles home without any more issues, but the check engine light remained on. I started the car a day later and check engine light was off but service ESC light came back on. Of course, it happened on a Friday over a holiday weekend, so I wasn't able to get the car in until today (Tuesday). The service tech told me that they may night be able to diagnose the car because the check engine light is off. I'm concerned after reading all of these other posts. I'll provide update once I hear back from the dealership.

2018 Equinox (2.0 LT trim model) with same “Service ESC - Traction control disabled” error. First time we took it in within two days (occurred on a Sunday - first available appointment was Tuesday) when the code displayed and when we explained the code and the way the steering column locked up and refused to respond to our attempts to accelerate, the dealership basically brushed us off and told us it was a fluke occurrence and it sounded like we pushed the gear shift into neutral...so they essentially gaslit us. We are unsure if the issue is related but when you click the passenger seat belt buckle into the mechanism, it triggers a warning to service the air bag system immediately. The dealership claims we need to replace the seat belt buckle. Obviously the issue persisted and we took it back within two weeks. They had the vehicle for almost a week and now claim it’s the battery. At this point I’m completely mistrustful of the dealership so I took the car to an O’Reilly auto parts store. They did confirm the battery was dying so we replaced it and we are making a service appointment to take the vehicle to a different dealership. We also intend to file a complaint to the NHTSA. I will update if we get any helpful information.
It’s the battery. They battery has code on it. The incorrect batteries were installed. It they check the battery no valid code will come up
Came out of a store only to have my 2018 60k miles NOX esc light come on and sputter all the way home. Turns out it was a bad ignition coil over one of the spark plugs- which made a spark plug go bad so had to replace them all. About $550 later runs fine.

I have a 2018 equinox, it started malfunctioning with in two months of driving off the lot, i noticed it drove differently than my friend's who leased hers. Esc, traction control, reduced power, and a grinding noise happen with in the engine. At first they said it was a misfire, faulty plug, battery, ect but the esc problem persisted. I've taken it in to the dealership (matthew hargreaves 12 mile near Stephen's) repeatedly for this issue and was told there's nothing wrong with it. I was told by one of the representatives that everyone in the 18 was experiencing the same issues and one case where the customer just bought the car didnt make it off the lot. The final straw was when a clip broke rupturing a line leaving me stranded 60 miles away from my house, gm roadside told me to wait until the dealership opened and i would get a rental. Unfortunately it was saturday night and they didn't open till monday. I called the gm customer service and tried to enact the lemon law because the problems were not going away. They ketp giving me new representatives and refused to say anything but, "We'll fix it." I finally spoke to Laura Fitzpatrick who... made it clear they had no intentions of honoring the lemon law, "We'll fix it!" Is what she said. Well how about all the damage occuring because of the malfunctions? Recently, (see picture) i called the dealership's service department and got the service manager at Matthew hargreaves and was told twice on two separate occasions that if i want the car inspected, I'd have to pay for it. The problem is driver induced, they said that i pushed the gas petal all the way to the floor. Earlier this morning i hit the gas to merge with traffic and the lights came back on. I have never heard of any car company that had any integrity telling a customer that hitting the gas will cause your engine to malfunction... i truly regret spending one dollar with them, G.M. and will never buy another GM again! Number one in customer satisfaction huh?!?l WITH WHO?

I bought a used 2018 Equinox with 22000 miles on it. When I use the key fob for remote start, the ESC light comes on. If I drive a short distance, stop and shut it off, restart it with dash button, the message goes away. The dealer checked it out, but couldn't find a code stored. I called Chevy HQ, but they just said to take it back to the dealer.
Same issue as Guru9W9ZV8....Its a '18 LT with 37k on it. Took it a week after I bought it to the dealer and service could not replicate it....came up again with the same scenario (remote starting it) and the dealership replaced a module that is hooked to the negative battery terminal. They tried to charge me my $50 deductible but I said I wouldn't pay for it since it wasn't my fault and the issue happened within a week after I bought it.....guess what, issue came up again....any ideas??

2018 Equinox with 87,000+ miles had all the observations listed in previous posts: Service ESC, Reduced Engine Power warning, Traction Control lights, Stabilization etc. First time it happened I was on the freeway and the car immediately reduced to 60 MPH, regardless if I had my foot to the floor. Pulled off the freeway and read info on Google. I waited 30 min, disconnected the battery to clear the warning messages and then started it back up....no problems....drove 80 miles home. Problem happened again the next day but near the house. Limped it back home at 22-30 MPS, let it set overnight and drove it to the dealership the next day (without problems). Dealership revealed the diagnoistic scan code was P0089 (check engine light stayed on), which led them to replace the fuel pump. I have my concerns that the problem was NOT related to the fuel pump, as the RPM's were running high, but the vehicle was still not maintaining regular speed. I would "believe" if the fuel pump was bad, I could not get 4500 RPM's and the engine would be stalling or would not start. Regardless, over the next couple of days I will see if this "fix" truly corrects the problem.
Lucy2019, how did you solve the problem??

So embarrassing Chevy! My wife’s 2022 Equinox with only 5000km ESC light with bunch of other error lights came in when she started to move in a mall parking lot. it is like the whole car is dead, but flasher was working. Tow truck came after 2 hours to move it to dealership. When car was 2000km the whole transmission system breakdown and the they replace the whole system!. Now in dealership! no trust to chevy anymore! never try chevy models again!
