when turning i heard a loud pop and a spring unwinding.

Asked by hribar Feb 11, 2020 at 12:43 PM about the 2018 Ford Edge Titanium AWD

Question type: General

i was turning left when i heard a loud pop and then a sound like a spring unwinding.  it was a high pitch sound that did go away after just seconds.  i was momentarily hesitant about continuing to drive but needed to get out of the intersection.  i went directly to my ford dealership and told them what i heard.  just yesterday a man with a ford truck was at the dealership describing the same exact thing happening to him.  anyone have any thought?  the service person asked a mechanic and he thought it could be the traction device working but i was on dry roads.

8 am appointment tomorrow morning to look at the edge. thanks for your reply...

after inspecting the underside of the suv and test driving it, the end result was the ford garage is ordering a new rear differential for the edge. there is a service bulletin out on the problem although they have only been seeing it in the smaller fords.

The symptoms described do NOT sound like a differential! Spring unwinding sound while turning can only be spring related. Differentials use gears and those wouldn't make a "spring like sound". I'm sure it has to do with the strut assembly.
