It needs to be checked out but a lot of times it is the fuel sending unit in the gas tank.

If you can find the electrical connection near the gas tank, you can isolate the problem. There will probably be 4 wires. one is 12v going to the fuel pump in the gas tank. one will be a ground wire. the other two are the in and out wire for the gage/fuel level By unplugging the connection and determining which wires are the above, (1) you can measure across the two wires going to the tank if if the sending unit is bad you will probably have an open reading (or now resistance) (2) then on the connector going to the front of the car...IP first what does the fuel gage presently read? Full or empty? Then with the wire disconnected, what does it read? By doing this test you can verify if the problem is in the tank or in the dash.
