Fuel pump problem, brand new Outback

Last month I bought a brand new 2018 6-cylinder Outback.  I drove to work yesterday (everything was fine), I turned off the car, and then a few minutes later I restarted the car.  The car started shaking violently and when I put it into drive it died.  I tried starting it again and the same thing happened.  After a third try it just died immediately before I could put it into gear.

I had the car towed to the dealer (the car only has 1000 miles on it).  They told me that the fuel pump had been incorrectly installed in the factory.  Apparently there is a clip that needs to be put on, and this was missing.  They told me that they've fixed the problem and everything is fine.

Questions: Does this sound like a reasonable explanation? Could permanent damage have occurred to my car because of this?  (I know the dealer will tell me no, so I would like another opinion!)  This is the first new car I've owned, and it's disappointing to think I've bought a lemon.  And scary to think of this problem happening while I'm driving.  I pick up the car tomorrow.  Are there particular questions I should ask or things I should look out for?
