'02 Mazda 626 LX 2.5L V6. Overheating - need advice - have repair manual so can fix myself

Asked by jcope0762 Aug 28, 2014 at 03:25 AM about the 2002 Mazda 626 LX V6

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a '02 Mazda 626 LX with the
2.5L V6. I had a overheating issue
basically a year ago to the date,
ended up being my luck both the
thermostat and waterpump failed
within a day of each other, as a result
both got replaced and never had a
issue again in till a day ago. It started
dumping all antifreeze it had through
the overflow canister and have a loud
but dull whine like something rubbing
but all belts good. No leaks around
water pump or thermostats housing.
System flushed and replace in march
(did myself). Could either of those
really fail again after only a year? Or
could I have a blockage somehow
and how to check?

Did you replace the radiator cap? When the cap go's bad it sometimes will do just what you described.

I have 2 caps, 1 on the overflow canister and the other is on the block side of the line running from block (exit) to radiator (enter). Never replaced either but neither have blown seals. No cap directly on radiator.

Hmmmm. Just for grins and giggles try replacing the cap to the over flow tank. It's 12 years old. If you're luck you got off cheap.

Your whine might be a water pump. If the fins separated from the shaft then they would make all kids of weird noises (or none at all). Start the engine when it’s cold and open the radiator cap on the overflow tank. You should see movement in the fluid coming from the little hose that runs across the fan cowl. Hope this helps!
