2018 Subarus
Asked by jgburns Oct 10, 2017 at 12:40 AM about the 2018 Subaru Crosstrek Touring
Question type: General
Questions re: new 2018 Subarus. Is there still a problem w. boxer engine longevity due to coolant leaks, oil use, and/or blown head gaskets? Is there any difference in engine reliability in the 2.0 vs. the 2.5 engines? the normally aspirated vs. the turbo engines? Finally, has their CVT transmission longevity problem been corrected w, the redesign of their Lineartronic CVT?

Who knows? 18's have only been out for a month.
Check back in 3 or 4 years when enough problems have surfaced to be statistically meaningful.
The engines are unchanged from the 2017 models, correct? I believe the CVT remains the same also.
Subaru was forced to extend the CVT warranties due to problems. As far as I know, no significant changes have been made to engines and transmissions for years.
FOR, please do not think I don't appreciate appreciate your input. According to my reading, the engines were changed a couple of years ago when an increase in compression decreased the lubrication and cooling issues. The CVT was supposedly updated 3-4 years ago improving longevity. I just wanted to see if longtime Subaru owners or mechanics had seen improvements in both.
If you have links to your information it would help. I don't know how a compression bump would improve oil consumption and engine cooling.
Let me amend my original question, if you were to buy a new Subaru, would you strongly consider biting the bullet and purchasing a long extended warranty? Would you do so at the dealership or go to another party just before the powertrain warranty expires? Thanks.
I would never buy one as my experience with my 2015 Forester has been a disaster. Buy the warranty if you get a new Subaru. If they fix the problems I will reconsider but they are keeping it a secret if they have.
Re-read your last post. Buy the Subaru extended warranty. I have used mine a lot.
Thanks! I was also looking at info. on the upcoming '19 Forester. They supposedly are changing the higher HP engine to a 2.5 liter turbo, and structurally they will employ new universal platform. I guess it's back to the drawing board for me.
I try to never buy the first year of a new design. Too many problems to sort out.
Check out the Mazda CX-5!
I like the Mazda, but my wife has her heart set on a CRV (no real revisions over the 2017 mid-year release). re: new designs. Too bad! I was also looking at the '18 Accord 2.0T. Maybe we'll stay w. the clunkers another year or two.
If you need a good AWD vehicle the Subaru or Mazda is the way to go. Part time AWD sucks.
We have a four yr old Mazda3 we've promised to our daughter. The car has been good except for the heads up display, but the local dealer has slow service (Mazda is their third line.) and also have been less than honest (corrected by MazdaUSA). I do not want to use them in the future.
AWD is a nice option for us on rain slicked roads, but snow or ice is a 1-2x per decade event for us near the TX Gulf Coast.
We do travel to Dallas (bottom of the ice belt) fairly often and west Texas and Colorado occasionally.
Subaru has dropped out of Consumer Reports top 10 reliable brands. Unless Subaru cleans up its act I will never buy another one.

Do not buy a Subaru. I bought a 2018 crosstrek and it is burning about 2 qts in 6000 miles. Subaru says this is standard. On top of that the engine pings like crazy in warm weather.
From the consumer report website: Also moving up the reliability spectrum were Volkswagen, up six spots, and Subaru, up five spots to rank sixth overall, despite the below-average redesigned Impreza. Three brands dropped significantly: Acura, Mazda, and Cadillac.
JUST BOT A 2018 FORESTER WITH CVT. NO MORE THAN GOT IT HOME AND IT WOULD DIE AND START UP AGAIN FROM SHORT STOPS OR GOING SLOWLY. CANT TRUST IT. DEALSER SAYS IT HAS TO GET USED TO ME (BS). HAD 3 PREVIOUS SUBARUS, THIS IS MY LAST ONE. PROBABLY WILL DUMP IT.
@guruYJ46m I have a 2018 crosstrek I bought with 6 miles on it and at 1100 had to get towed in for same issues. Had my car a week and told me to suck it up as they could replicate the issue.
Guru5RF9H, are you still having problems with excessive oil burning in your 2018 Crosstrek? Has the dealer been willing or able to address it? Thank you for your helpful post.

I've got a 2018 Crosstrek and twice now I've had to add oil. First time I was around 8,000 KMs, second time 7,000 KMs. Dealer tells me this is normal part of the break in process but I'm not buying it. Anyone have any luck resolving their similar issue?
Bought my 2018 Crosstreck on May 31 2018 with 6 miles on it. Next day the engine shut off on me going through a stop sign. The engine light, alternator light came on. I had to place the car in park and push start the engine again. I thought it was user error. Just last week the same thing happened pulling out of a grocery store parking lot. I was turning into a major intersection, thank god I was able to put the car in park in and restart before getting in an accident. I called Subaru and they said bring it in ASAP. I am in a rental and they will not be giving me the car back until they can replicate the issue. There is a serious issue with the engines.
I bought a '18 Crosstrek 1 yr ago. 12,000 miles with no oil consumption - 2 oil changes. No issues at all.
I have a 2010 Forester that just got back from an oil change - HG is just starting to leak! It has 45K - yes only 45K miles on it! Trade it in or bite the bullet to get it fixed?!?!? This is practically a new car.......
Dogs - fix it but shop for a good price and avoid dealers if you can.
Purchased my 2018 Impreza Sport in July 2018. Always drove a manual, but considered it's time to make the switch in favor of comfortability considering i commute 140 miles/day. After about 4000 miles, I began to hear some slight clanking while the car was warming up. Figured it was harmless, brand new car breaking in.. However, once in began to dip near freezing temps overnight, (i.e. end of September in the North East), the sound became louder and louder. After about a week of it being so loud, I brought it to the dealership for service and to diagnose the issue. The result: a whole new transmission is needed. I should've never switched to automatic.
Oil consumption on the 2013 crosstrek was a problem and sort of still is, since warning light comes on at inconvenient times; 0-20 weight synthetic oil is most expensive; 2016 Outback bought hastily as a replacement for a totaled 2009 Outback was cherry and full of bells and whistles, i.e. rear video, bluetooth etc. Despite high mileage of 40,000+ miles it was immaculate. I've never even had a new car that clean.....anyway I could do without automatic trans and that faux emergency brake, and a lot of the features----who reads a 400 pp. owner's manual anyway let alone can take eyes off road to read the display? Just finished a 1,000 mile + road trip and mileage for this silver 'fat girl' was in mid- thirties....still can't believe it. Driver/passenger space could use a fold down tray from Dash and between the seats. Maine is quite rural and the map program is an essential when finding your way down islands and other rural areas. Improve it with Google Earth feeds and it would be heaven for anyone who has to travel the State.
I had a f 150 with 5.0 used to use 10 w 30 drove 300 miles used a qt of oil switched to 5 w 30 hasn't used at quart since try different grade oils
I have a 2014 XV Crosstrek and after 5 years I had enough. Wheel bearing hub issues, AC compressor and condenser, front axle shaft, burns a qt of oil every 5K miles, CVT is noisy and does funky stuff like shutter and hang at a certain ratio and now seems to have a slight rod knock. I drove the Subaru brand for 20 years but these newer ones are garbage. Test drove an Outback and its not much better. Sorry Subaru your cars are not worth it anymore. If you must have one Get The Extended Warranty!
