where does the ground wire from the battery go?

to the body ! it is attached to provide a whole body negative

Engine and body. The metal body completes the circuit. The battery is the storage, the alternator supplies the current. The voltage is from 12v to 15v depending on whats on ( headlights, amps ect.) and how many time you have to start the engine.
