$789.00 to replace a gear shift linkage cable for a 2000 mazda 626 seems awfully expensive. Could this be right

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I had my car towed to a garage and the mechanic has given me an estimate of
$789.00 to replace the gear shift linkage cable in my 2000 mazda 626, which
only has 95,000 miles on it.  He said the cable is $190 & its suppose to be a 6.5
hr job. (He looked it up in a labor/procedure manual).  Could this be right?

Yes it could be right, some jobs are labor intensive. Why not shop around and see what other wrenches charge?
