A tapping sound from my engine when accelerating

That's never a good sign , If you're convinced the oil has been religiously maintained then hopefully it's not something major . But it sounds like a valve knocking .

- or a valve lifter. You might want to try an oil additive made to silence valve components.

If the check engine light or service engine soon light is on you may have a bad knock sensor. The knock sensor is like a microphone that listens for spark/knock. It then sends a signal to the computer to retard the ignition timing to eliminate the spark/knock. If that's not the case, try a higher octane gasoline. If that doesn't fix it there's something worn in the engine that won't be cheap to fix. Hope that helps! Jim

A bad alternator makes a sound that's close to a tappet sound. Just open the hood and follow the sound.
