Will a engine from a 95 explorer work with a 98 explorer

Are both vehicles equipped with the 4.0 V6 engine? If so yes, but understand. during the life of the 4.0 V6 OHV engine, it went through many modifications and changes to head design, block design, cam, etc. The last modification before the engine was discontinued was for the 97 through 2000 model year. Many internal engine parts for the 95 will not interchange properly with the 98. If repair is required down the road, and the mechanic is under the impression the engine is from a 98, repairs will be a disaster. Make sure if you do the swap, inform the mechanic if any engine work has to be done in the future, informing him the engine is a 95.

Yes. There were many revisions to the 4.0 ohv engine during it's lifetime. I suggest you write down the vin of the donor engine and keep it. As not all internal parts of the engine are not interchangeable. You could drive a mechanic insane if, down the road major engine repair is needed. Tell any mechanic in the future the engine was out of a 95.
