If timing is off that can cause overheating so get that fixed first... Are you loosing any coolant? Is the oil a milky color? Gray smoke? Coolant leaking into the combustion chamber is usually a white smoke. How dark of a gray are we talking about here? Once you get the timing sorted out and answer those questions we can start diagnosing the problem a little more properly.

Ive never heard of timing problems themselves causing overheating. But if you have sweet smelling white smoke, milky colored oil and your losing coolant then it sounds like you blew your head gasket. Big job to do on the Millenia, honestly you might as well look into a used 2.3 engine on Ebay cause it will be cheaper than rebuilding it.
