Gas Tank Access Door

Asked by GuruV4BS4 Jul 30, 2018 at 12:00 PM about the 2019 RAM 1500 Big Horn Crew Cab 4WD

Question type: General

I just purchased a 2019 Ram 1500 Black Out Big Horn. There is not release
or lock to open the gas tank door. It's the strangest thing, I have to use an ice
cream stick to pry the door open. This is a $53k pick up truck, i'm sure
there's an easier way to do this or maybe they just forget to put the release
on my truck.
Any help would be appreciated.

I'm having a heck of a time finding any information on this one. I would try pushing on side or the other of the fuel door. These newer vehicles usually have a push to open feature. Kind of like a lot of mirrors or cabinets in your bathroom. Yeah I know...it was the only comparison I could come up with.

Yes it's a push to open. I'm trying to figure out why they haven't made a locking gas cap for the 2019 ram big horn 1500 new body style. This is driving me extremely crazy knowing they don't have them for this truck. If I would have known they don't have them at the time I got the damn truck I would have never gotten it............... Stupid

I actually push in at the center of my 2019 ram 1500s fuel door. Makes no sense that a 60,000$ truck does not have a locking fuel door.

The 2020 does not have a locking fuel door. Just had to google this to figure out how the hell to open it! This thing has every option available and I have to push randomly like an idiot to get the fuel door open‍♀️

If it works like my 09 Pontiac G8. You push the fuel door in and it springs open. When you lock the car doors it also locks the fuel door. So no need for a locking gas door.

It doesn’t lock when you lock the Truck, you can still push on the rear portion of it and it bounces open. Looks similar to a locked fuel door, just gotta know the secret push and it bounces up to open.

I have a 2020 Ram Big Horn 4x4 about 5 days old. Yup. Same deal. No locking fuel port access door. Lock up the truck and the fuel door will spring open when given the appropriate push. Of course, there's the self-sealing gas port which is handy. However, it has no cap that locks (that I've found yet), so, you're totally susceptible to vandals putting sugar in your tank or, more likely, siphoning your gas. == This sucks. Anyone found a solution? Thanks.

I have a 2019 Laramie...same complaint...and Ram’s justification, as stated in the owners manual, they did this style of gas port just for consumer convenience!!!!!!! So, we American consumers have become so lazy that we would justify the risk of stolen gas or vandals sabotaging our engine for “convenience”!!!! Very poor logic on Dodge Ram managers; very poor, that they deserve to be fired!

So many people whining about a fuel door. I have a 2020 AMG GTR it doesn't have a locking fuel door either, still an absolutely amazing and perfect super car. It is just another thing to potentially go wrong, jam, etc. Every luxury vehicle I have had long term, the fuel door becomes an issue. If it bothers you to push on the door instead of a button inside the truck, I don't know what to tell you about that mentality. If you are worried about fuel theft, go to Napa autoparts and get a locking fuel cap- Or move.

With gas prices going up the likelihood of gas thieves targeting 'easy access' RAM gas tanks is a real problem. Anyone found a lockable gas cap that fits?

I am having problems putting gas in the gas tank. It goes for a couple of gallons, quits, and then a little at a time goes in. It takes forever to fill it up. I took it to our mechanic and he replaced the ESIM and cleaned filter on fuel filler neck. He said if this did not work I need a new gas tank. Has anyone else had problems with their gas tanks? I have a 2019 Dodge Ram truck.

Sometimes you have to weigh out what’s going to cost you more; replacing your gas tank because a desperate thief drilled a hole in your tank because you had a locking fuel door or a locking gas cap or the vandals who put crap in your tank that cost you your engine. Which one will you put your money on? We can play fear tactics all day long. Ask our government masks are the answer.
