My SUV will not start.

Asked by KHarris97 Aug 11, 2016 at 11:26 AM about the 2004 Mercury Mountaineer Convenience AWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Okay so I have checked the battery, it's
good, checked the starter, it's good. The
lights come on when I try to turn it on. It
won't turn over at all. It makes a click noise
when I turn the key and that's it. Not sure
what to check next, the security system,
which I have no clue how to reset, or the
ignition switch which I also have no clue
how to do.

Not your starter. We just had this same problem and didn't realize what it was until after we changed the alternator, belt, starter, and battery. If you dont have the original key then it is most likely the chip in the key that has gone bad. A sure sign is when you turn the key to the on position in your car the security light continues to blink even after about 10 seconds. If this happens that's likely the case. BUT before you pay for a new key have someone look at it and make sure that there isn't a remote start hooked up, if there is then it is also likely that the remote start has shorted out your security system and getting a new key will only last temporarily. If you're security system is messed up then if your battery dies or has to be unconnected for any reason it will reset your security system and you'll be looking at getting a new key again.

Mine 2003 mountaineer SUV also has a new battery and I tested the battery and it's not the battery and it's not the starter and I also tested the gear shift to see if there was any play in it and there's no play in it. I need to know what else I need to check and also I have no place to put transmission fluid so where's it go?

I’m actually having this problem and it’s a fuse issue. So check your fuses first.

I recently bought a 2002 Mercury Mountaineer for cheap because the woman said it wouldn't start. We troubleshooted with all sorts of ideas/recommendations but it ended up being a $30 part from the dealership called an IGNITION TRANSCEIVER MODULE. It's a round plastic piece that goes around the ignition to transmit the code from key-PCM, it's part of the PATS (passive anti theft system). Got the part same day and 10 mins later I had a good running SUV! I hope you get it figured out, good luck!
