i replaced a starter on 2001 mercury sable starter, not engaging the flywheel to start the car

The bendix gear is stuck or the solenoid is bad check the gear or return for another starter

I have a 2002 mercury sable my starter is bad. How can I tell which starter is the right one to buy on line. It says there is 2 different starters for it
