98 ford taurus broke down

wnt up a hill and decided to quit and wont restart, earlier this week when going up a hill it backfired

Sounds like a fuel issue. Assuming that you have more than a half tank of gas, and that it is a relatively steep hill. Either your fuel pump is getting weak or your fuel filter is in need of replacement. If you however are running near empty, like many of us do these days, it may be an issue of your fuel sending unit inside the tank not being able to pickup fuel.
