p0174 system too lean bank 2 + flashing engine light

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I recently got the P0174 code and the engine light also flashes some of the
time (misfire?). I have a Ford Taurus 1998.

The car runs fine except when I go up a hill it lacks power and cannot go
past 70-80Km and if I give it more gas it does not increase in speed but
instead goes into high RPM (around 4000). Maybe downshifts? Car runs fine
on flat ground. I also have higher fuel burn then usual but haven't noticed
any fuel leak. I do smell a bit of gas from the engine when it's running, but
it's an old car so maybe it's normal?

So far  I have cleaned the MAF,  changed the gas filter, changed the spark
plugs, put fuel injector cleaner and replaced a couple vacuum hoses that
were getting old. The car now idles better then it used to but the engine light
and lack of power going up a hill hasn't gone away.

P0174 means Oxygen sensor on bank 2 detected lean condition (too much oxygen) on bank 2. The MAF (Mass Air Flow) Sensor is dirty or faulty. Dirty or oily air filter can cause the MAF to become dirty. There is also an issue with some vehicles where the MAF sensors leak the silicone potting material used to protect the circuitry. There could be a vacuum leak downstream of the MAF sensor. Check fuel pressure to make sure it's not starving for fuel

Well like I said I've changed the air filter, cleaned the MAF and checked for vacuum leaks so I think the problem is something else. How can I check for fuel pressure?

Connect a pressure gauge to the fuel rail, there's a fitting where you can connect it to.

I had that power issue also, it turned out to be one of the Catalytic Converters was plugged. New coil pack, new wires, new plugs, it turned out to be a failed Fuel Pressure regulator had gone bad & dumped raw fuel into the front cylinders. Bye bye cat.
