2005 mini cioper

Asked by jessica Feb 05, 2017 at 02:20 PM about the 2005 MINI Cooper Hatchback

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I bought my 2005 mini cooper back in november, it
has 84,000 miles. Runs great, but the check engine
light keeps coming on..my boyfriend hooked it up
to the scanner at autozone and it said cylinder 1
missfire. So he changed the sparkplugs and coils,
the light went out, but shortly came back on.. this
is my first foreign car so for the first couple weeks
i was using regular gas, the check engine light
went out after a week of using premium gas, but
once again the light is back and showing the same
code, cylinder 1 missfire.. it runs great overall..i
have no complaints, but we cant figure out what
the problem is.. im in quite the pickle as of now
because my registration is due in a cpl days and i
need emission testing...i have a mechanic who
knows minis looking at it tomorrow but im scared
to death its gonna be something serious.. any
advice?

Check the plugs and see what condition they are in. If the car was detonating from low octane gas the plugs could be damaged,

Are you referring to the spark plugs? After we got the same missfire code, he checked #1 and it was indeed damaged again. All sparkplugs are new, along with coil.. he switched the fuel injector on cylinder 1 yet the light is still on.. i have also noticed that the gas mileage isnt quite what it should be, and it feels a little rough when you put it in reverse, but otherwise it sounds good.. no other lights or anything come on..

I have wanted a mini since they came out, but im now in my 30s and had the chance to have one..i love it to death and want it to run good because im a traveler!

If the spark plugs are damaged that would probably be the cause of the misfire. Use premium and hope that the problem goes away. If the plug problem continues you may need to go with a colder plug. Your auto parts store should know what that means.
