CVT Transmission on 2003 base Model MIni Cooper

Asked by GuruYKJ8 Mar 29, 2017 at 05:00 PM about the 2003 MINI Cooper Base

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 2003 Mini will not go above 2000 RPM and 10 MPH while driving in a straight line (road) After I pulled over I discovered the dash position indicator reads in "P"ark even when the gear shift shows R or D.  Is this a CVT Transmission issue??

The mini is in what is called limp mode, and yes the CVT transmission is notorious for failure, unlike the manual. you may just need a trans fluid change or it may need replaced, from what i understand costing upwards of 8k usd. or WayMotorWorks sells a cvt/manual conversion for much cheaper, and more reliable, if you can do the manual thing.

Thanks for your answer. I can do a manual...but I thought the CVT was a closed system and you could not change the fluid??

If that happens to me is cause excess oil. one of the bolts you have to open to take out the excess oil while car is running. That the oil expands and heats the transmission has nowhere to go. Start Emergency program display ep if you don’t take it out It will be hours to cool down and will happens again and again.
