MINI Cooper CVT heavy drive engagement

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a MINI Cooper 2002 CVT and it has very heavy enegagement when I
select Drive. It then feels like it is really pulling against the brakes and wants
to go.
Engagement into R is very smooth.
I have replaced the CVT oil which helped slightly.
Any thoughts please on how to fix the heavy engagement?

By the way. No MIL lights are showing at any point. There had been an open circuit on the can-bus wire (purple as it goes into OBD connector) but this has been fixed by connecting a replacement wire across the open circuit.
